This film is based on a real Meiji era performer -- and tells of Tochuken's partnership with his wife (played by Chikako Hosokawa) who played shamisen for his songs/recitations), his affair with a geisha (Sachiko Chiba), the deterioration of his partnership and marriage and the angry death of his wife (in a hospital -- due to lung disease) followed by his rather sententious poeticizing over her remains. (Roslindale Monogatari)

The direction and acting are strong but I couldn't relate to any of the characters and I was unfamiliar with performer so I feel a lot of the impact may have been lost on me.

Mikio Naruse telling a story about a artist who suffers for his performance and only for his performance while his family suffer because of him. Somewhat interesting as we enter the egocentric mind of Tochuken and his carefree rich life. And he uses the 'suffering for his art' as an excuse for neglecting the feelings of his closest. The movie is a little vague in some senses and doesn't feel complete, but one get what's going on.
