A movie from Woody is like a birthday card from a grandparent at this point. You know excatly what the text is going to be and what amount of money is gonna be within. You would complain if it weren't for one simple fact: You do love that money so.

I suppose I am in the minority here and this is going to through off my TCIs, but I absolutely loved this film. I was smiling ear to ear from beginning to end and I just found it so wonderful to watch. No, I don't think it will go down as one of Allen's best - of course not. But it is a lot funnier than its getting credit for, and there are a lot worse ways to spend an afternoon in a theatre. I really, really, really liked this.

Works when Allen sticks to what he's good at, i.e. neurotic acting & the very fun Baldwin-Eisenberg storyline. Unfortunately, 2 out of 4 stories fall completely flat: the "15 minutes of fame"-thing has been done to death and the 'happy hooker' seen here not only brings nothing new to table, but is borderline offensive.

Some wonderfully shot scenes -- Benigni on the streets, the mortician singing in the shower -- and Woody still doesn't seem totally enchanted with Europe, which is good, but he just expands the Midnight in Paris' low fantasy into four vignettes, about americans and italians. Only one works, with Eisenberg and Page truly matching Woody's material. The rest is too easygoing, too adorable, too relaxed. Woody, please, get back to New York. We need our atheist, grumbling, irritable little jew back.

That's a superb anti film! Lots of meaningful criticism. American opportunism meets with Italian food patriotism. From being cool with philosophical words to meaningless famosity that reflects our day. Lots of absurdism. I loved it.

A very playful movie by a director who is incredibly comfortable with what he does and can do basically anything he wants. Sometimes I wonder if I under-appreciate Woody Allen's more recent affairs if only because I'm so familiar with his work (this is my 39th Woody Allen movie). They do run together in a way, yet, even when watching a "lesser" flick like TO ROME WITH LOVE, there's really no one quite like him. Enjoyable.

The temporality made no sense, but this just means Woody Allen is playing around with form, because he figures why not do so, and trusts the audience to work it out for themselves. Sometimes it seems he's the only working American director really relaxed enough to play around like this, just as it sometimes seems that he is the only director anywhere who, in filmmaking terms, is not a sexual hypocrite. A few pretty funny moments. My fortieth Woody.

This is another very funny film by Woody Allen. This movie deals with relationships, fame and fidelity among other things. There are several interesting characters and stories. The plot parts that had to do with fame are really entertaining. The opera is hilarious and there are any other funny scenes. This is a must see if you are a Woody Allen fan.

I liked some characters, like Benigni's, but others didn't work at all, like Baldwin's, although I liked the casting of him. Generally, I find it, that Allen's touch is lacking a bit of finesse in this flick. I'm never really interested or surprised. Best story though, was the one about the singer. Maybe because I didn't know the actor...?

The four stories aren't without their amusing bits and ideas, but the utter lack of ANY connective tissue between them - a single character crossing between stories, shared settings, thematic or even tonal crossover, anything - made it a mystery why this was even a feature-length movie when it could have just been four separately released shorts. I was ready for it to be over by the end.

Good. The Eisenberg/Baldwin story is the most substantial, as its the one that gives Woody the chance to make the most commentary. The other three are just really fun to watch, mostly because Woody and Roberto Benigni are back on the screen and Penelope Cruz is stunning. Pretty good cast all around, nice cinematography and a great score.

Woody light, that is to say, could've easily been worse. It was nice to see him in front of the camera again, back to his mumbling, neurotic self, and the Baldwin storyline had an amusing egde to it, though I can't say I was giddy at the prospect of Eisenberg and Page's potential match-up; Both have the sex appeal of a toilet seat. Diverting, if nothing else.

Lame fluff, but not as punishingly dull as You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger, even though the two-hour runtime is pretty brutal. Has a couple genuine laughs and I like when Woody and Judy Davis are on screen. Also it's inherently funny that Gerwig and Page were in a Woody Allen movie (that Monica lesbian scene has aged well! The Woodman is a prophet!!), particularly because they share a lot of screen time with Alec Baldwin, who is pretty fun in this. Roberto Benigni looks like Max Wright.

So, i will not hide that see all these cliches is hard to digest; but i can bear easily every cliché, every stereotype, with a great script which makes them funny. I'm not touchy, and i'm used to the stereotypes about us, they are even a good starting point for conversation with foreigns. But here the script is tired. A failed tribute to the classic italian anthology films. Lazy and banal pictures of Rome don't help.

Very hit-and-miss, with half of the stories being very enjoyable, and some of the performances very charming,... but this leaves several elements which are absurd to the point of being boring. I could sense how glad the whole theater was to see Woody again, fraught with anxiety and droll one-liners right off the bat. Though he'd probably never say, I think he's glad to be back. He's so sure-handed and lighthearted that not every premise needs to even connect or even be logically established, and none of that matters. This is his funniest movie since Deconstructing Harry, and has almost as big and eclectic a cast, not all of whom really come to life, but some are their best in years.

(VIewed on 17/01/13)Typical postcard nonsense from U.S directors making films in romantic Euro cities, but unlike Midnight In Paris it doesn't question its romanticised engagement. The Italian characters are pure stereotypes--stubborn, hotheaded, overtly sexual and open to affairs etc--but they are balanced by somewhat amusing scenarios which test their values. Penelope Cruz was a standout as a high class whore, and there are definitely a few laughs, but it's completely forgettable.

This movie bored me stupid. One of Allen's worst ever IMO. I would have cut out the whole Benigni story - an incongruous, banal one-joke strand. Cut out Alec Baldwin and his annoying Jiminy Cricket cameo. That just leaves the young love triangle story, which is material way below the likes of Gerwig, Page and Eisenberg. And the Italian-American story, which is 75% Woody Allen doing long-winded unfunny Woody Allen bits - talk about Rome being the world capital of narcissism!

Works successfully as four independent short films. While some vignettes are better than others, they're all cleverly designed and, most importantly, funny. The characters, while all typical Allen, are enjoyable, and the situations they find themselves in are the kind of borderline fantasy that Woody does best. This definitely won't be considered one of his greats, but I was pleasantly surprised (especially given its mixed reviews) at how fresh and entertaining it turned out to be.

It's funny a lot of people find this film pointless due to its zero connectivity between vignettes, and that sounds like a criticism I would share in most respects, but for whatever reason it never even occurred to me while watching this film. Woody Allen and Judy Davis are a superb, hilarious couple in this. Everything else is a shadow of some element of an older Allen film. These stories are so segregated despite being edited into one another that it's a slog to jump around to each tired concept. Allen's Euro-era has had a handful of good films, but most of them are just so touristy. They offer the notion that they're about showing you what's great about the cities they take place in but the results are often surface-level insights.

I enjoyed the Benigni bits most consistently, while the Eisenberg-Page-Baldwin and Penelope Cruz segments had their moments. However, the whole thing seems sloppy, as if the script were just thrown together. There are a few pretty pictures of Rome throughout, but Woody's never been much of a visual stylist. Thus, not even the formal choices can raise this beyond mediocrity.

I really like many Woody Allen movies that even fans dislike, Melinda & Melinda and Whatever Works, but this one really kind of falls more than flat, but somehow also feels very Italian. An uneven film with a mess of a plot, but it's still charming and really funny. This movie wasn't an abject failure but it wasn't a success either. All the characters were delightful in some ways but if you ask me what this movie is about I would say... how the hell should I know? Was Alec Baldwin really there or was he a narrator? Why does Woody Allen act? Does he think he is Larry David and is funny? What the heck was up with the whole Roberto Benigni storyline? This movie leaves you with more questions than answers. Woody Allen raises the art of common people on the level of high art. For him a simple worker can produce the level of art as does the professional highly paid artist. It's the needle in the flesh of high art as Rowan Atkinson did in his movie Bean: The Ultimate Disaster Movie (nobody paid attention that the painting was a fake!). I like the fantasy level of Woody Allen, but practically only Alec Baldwin's got funny and well written character.

Enjoyable Woody trifle which has little to say, and suffers from a lack of thematic connections in its stories, but as a disposable entertainment it works very well, moreso in parts than as a whole. Despite its modest critical reception, I really enjoyed To Rome with Love. I liked the way its four distinct storylines didn't interconnect, but rather shared thematic elements; the notions of searching for direction and what it means to be a success are dealt with very well. Possibly Woody's worst film ever. Unfunny, predictable, moralistic and, worst of all, devoid even of the pleasantness of "Midnight in Paris" or "Whatever Works" (which were also far from riveting but at least amusing and likable), this is the closest Allen has ever come to making a truly bad picture. When you have films with multiple stories, some will inevitably be less engaging than others. As a result, you spend a lot of time just waiting to get back to the interesting bits. The opera singer story and the newlyweds story (while not bad) were out of their depths, and I kept wishing the film would just go back to Baldwin (particularly) and Benigni.
