To Each His Own

Olivia de Havilland wins her first Oscar, and Charles Brackett's script shines. "They don't make 'em like they used to" and all that.

A highly polished drama as a single mother's plan goes wrong, resulting in having to follow her son's life from the sideline. More than anything, this movie is a credit to Olivia de Havilland. She handles the role with credibility and is quite simply the entire spirit of the movie.

Enjoyable melodrama, typical of the era, with de Havilland good as WW1-era small-town woman who gives up her illegitimate son, much better as the middle aged spinster in the bookend sequences. Variable supporting cast but I did like Culver.

The woman's picture par excellence, put together with tremendous Hollywood flair and extremely enjoyable to watch.

Top-notch melodrama.
