They don't put them all in a hotel the way John Wick does but this creates a really neat underworld of thieves that Cary is constantly at odds with. I had an uncle that worked as a grip and was fired during the making of this movie because every time Grace Kelly walked on set he would say, "I'll tell you what I'd like to catch," and I think that mentioning it here tells you more about me than it does him.

To Catch A Thief was a little disappointing. I was expecting some thrills, but instead I got a pretty good mystery. The performances were great as well as the Hermann score, but it I was expecting a lot more, especially when it was Hitchcock at the top of his career. Definitely worth a watch, Grant is charming, and Kelly is always beautiful, and Hitchcock leads them both in great performances.

First of all, this is not a thriller, but rather a very enjoyable romantic comedy/mystery. The central whodunit isn't very strong, but the dialogue, performances, cinematography, and direction are all impeccable. Also, both Grace Kelly and the French Rivera locations are jaw-droppingly gorgeous. A minor classic.

An entertaining yarn from fun-mode (or "North by Northwest-mode") Hitchcock. The crime story is predictable and the love story shallow albeit charming, but wall-to-wall gorgeous visuals (cinematography, locations, and women) make it a feast for the eyes and a joy to sit through.

Absolutely charming! Cary Grant and Grace Kelly are about as attractive as two people can be and the cinematography in water-front France is breathtaking. The story is fine, but merely serves to move us along to an unexceptional climax. I felt more impressed by the dialogue, direction, & music which make for an unforgettable viewing experience. Hitchcock has several better scripts and thrilling mysteries to his credit, but very few had such lush and ornate packaging.

Not Alfred Hithcock's best, but still entertaining to watch. There wasn't a whole lot of suspense, and to be honest I wasn't that interested in the mystery, but there were some fun back and forths between Cary Grant and Grace Kelly. It was worth watching, but it is kind of forgettable. Also there was way to many references to cats.

"To Catch a Thief" isn't one of Hitchcock's most suspenseful films, but it's an engrossing and skillfully made cosmopolitan mystery. It benefits from some gorgeous on-location shoots (visually, it's one of his most polished films), entertaining interplay between the charismatic leads and a well-written script. The pace is sometimes too relaxed through and the script too dialogue-heavy, which distracts from the main plot and limits the suspense. Still, it's a breezily enjoyable endeavour.

A paint-by-numbers Hitchcock film. While it certainly doesn't lose the Master's trademark wit - having some excellent dialogue - his singular verve is gone. And because it doesn't try anything new, there's nothing at stake, and it doesn't thrill like Hitch's best projects. Still, Grace Kelly.

Hitchcock just gives his two fantastic leads a great batch of dialogue to work with and some fantastic segments (the ball entrance is fantastic, both the car and fireworks romance scenes work well, and the chase is incredibly awesome) to make a fun but not fantastic film for his ouvre.

W3E1P1S1V1M1A1R0. The "mystery" feels a little forced, since you would have easily suspected the big reveal if you had been given any reason to really care about it along the way. But I was surprised to be so engaged in the story for a movie of this era. Good fun, if not very riveting.

The camera pans out from a close-up of Cary Grant's (John Robie) face in the shadows, the color of the night is green, and the tension has not been higher than this moment. There was no better shot in the movie. Hitchcock effectively deceives his audience multiple times through the course of this movie, oh, and he manages to weave a love story inside of that. It was also during this movie that I became a pretty big Grace Kelly fan.

Minor Hitchcock but a fine diversion. The Riviera is a beautiful setting and the VistaVision photography is stunning, and it's indeed worth seeing for that alone, but the plot is light and the stakes are just too low. It's lacking in suspense for that reason, as even Grant seems only mildly put off about his being framed. The romance between him and Kelly also lacks a certain spark. But the gorgeous setting and a healthy dose of humour make this entertaining viewing.

I could watch Cary Grant slap a hoe every day and never get sick of it, so great. Kind of a mixed bag here: decent acting, Grace Kelly looking hot as hell, great cinematography and use of color, really weak story and script. I guess Hitch was right when he said the 3 most important things in a film are the script, the script and the script because it has all the makings of a good movie but it just is unexciting and doesn't offer anything new.

I could watch Cary Grant doing laundry and be entertained. That said, he's especially, deliciously sarcastic in this Hitchcock film and the banter between his character and Grace Kelly's made me laugh out loud quite a bit. The film's lurid colors and diabolical framing delighted me as well. And that costume ball? Hilarious!

A fun crime caper with Cary Grant doing the best impersonation of the Cuprinol Man I've ever seen. It has a few notable flaws - most obviously the rear projection and the sped-up footage during the driving scenes, but also the terrible English dubbing of the French café owner at the start. The plot is pretty silly, and the ending is signposted a mile off, but it has a lightness of touch that makes it very easy to watch. Hitchcock shoehorns in some great cleavage shots, too, the sly dog.

Hitchcock in a workmanlike mode, cranking out an agreeable distraction that coasts somewhat on the panoramic views of European splendor, the everlasting charm of Cary Grant, and--perhaps most appealing to Hitchcock himself--the icy allure of Grace Kelly. It's glossy and professional, as is expected from someone whose mastery of the form is widely revered, but it doesn't reverberate. It's there, it passes, you start thinking about how good "Strangers on a Train" is.

The light touch is given to this film and Grant and Kelly are sizzling in what was a blip in Grant's career. At this stage of his career, Grant was playing it so safe he was down right boring. This film features the classic line of (after they've slept together) "I called the police and told them everything you did tonight" to which Grant replies "Everything? Hitchcock is technically sound and the film's setting makes up for its lack of a real plot, though to be fair nobody cares about the plot when Grace Kelly is onscreen. Her wardrobe overshadowed everything else. Grant carries the film on his dialogue. Auber makes a nice contrast with Kelly and I wish they spent more time together. Landis did well. Obligatory Grant on woman slap? Fav scene: a bit too much on the nose as far as innuendo goes, but the foreplay before the fireworks was tense.

The overabundance of snappy one-liners is an aggravating experience, the romance is eye-rolling, and it seems to overstay its welcome despite only being 100 minutes. Cary Grant seemed more interested in the French beach boys than any of his female romances, and the "reveal" at the end was fairly underwhelming. Beautiful photography, though...

Rewatch. The location scout for this movie definitely did their job much better than the screenwriter. A rather thrill free affair, which is especially damning considering how many adversaries Hitchcock tries to pile on to no avail. Cary Grant's attempts to look French are goofy, and Grace Kelly is completely superfluous-- and rather annoying to boot. A few good moments save it from being a total waste.

To Catch a Thief feels half-baked, lacking Hitchcock's usual suspense and edge. The plot meanders, the characters feel underdeveloped, and motivations are unclear. The ending is surprisingly predictable, a letdown for fans of his twists. While the scenery and lead chemistry are appealing, uneven pacing and filler-like stretches drag it down. Despite its charm, it falls far short of Hitchcock’s brilliance, making it a passable but forgettable entry in his oeuvre.

The mystery is actually pretty dreadful. It's difficult to believe that Grant is ever in any real danger of going to jail for a series of crimes that can't be connected to him by any actual evidence. His "M.O." seems to be "stealing jewels and leaving no evidence", which is hardly a decisive signature. Apparently the police believe he'd go out a steal a bunch of jewels and then just sit around the house waiting for them to show up. The idea that he has to go on the run is a real stretch.

This doesn't quite have the edge of normal Hitchcock, but it's a lighter, fluffier piece from him that still has a few thrills, some good romantic comedy, a well executed if a bit predictable mystery, and several great scenes, including the fireworks scene. Grant and Kelly have amazing chemistry. It's probably most similar to North but Northwest, but isn't as good as that one (though that's not much of an insult.) It's maybe Hitchcock's most picturesque film, though.

Feeling like Hitch's casual throwaway, this is still a splendidly entertaining and witty excuse to bask in the beauty of the French Riviera captured in glorious VistaVision, with Grant and Kelly the perfect stars to bring fireworks to an inconsequential plot; indeed the final act where the crime elements come into focus is almost bland and rote; I want more of the Grant-Kelly sexual tension! Nice support work from Landis, and a hilarious near spit-take from Williams, are the gravy.

It is a bit quaint and I don't get the appeal of Cary Grant as a male lead, he is downright ugly and not a great actor. On the other hand, Grace Kelly has this timeless beauty and Hitchcock used the opportunities of scenery offered by Cote d'Azur to its maximum. As Grant's character gets to the bottom of the situation, he meets an interesting cast of characters from his past and some new ones too. This was a nice, fun watch, with inevitably a hint of nostalgia about it (it was released in 1955). There are the scenes with women fighting over the male lead character and I suppose it has a hint of a James Bond film about it i.e. 'Casino Royale', although this is decidedly less an action film, more a somewhat light romantic drama. It is a little cliched and not, overall, greatly exciting as such but I enjoyed it and would recommend it to others regardless, yes.

What it lacks in excitement and plot, it more than makes up for in sheer charm and likability. Grant is the very definition of urbane and suave, and Kelly genuinely steals every scene she is in. It's a shame that the entertainingly wry screenplay is married to such an waste of a plotline; never making the most of the promising concept of thief chasing thief. This (derservedly) is minor Hitchcock, but that doesn't mean avoid, and 'To Catch a Theif' still comes recommeded.

This Cannes/Riviera-based romcom shows Hitchcock's fetichism all over the place -- if he was ignored by his blonde muses in real life, here it's up to Cary Grant to play it hard; Foussard's death scene is one of a kind --, but generally suffers from the lack of good performances by the rest of the cast -- except Cary, of course, with his irony filling almost every sentence. Satisfyingly good-looking -- specially when he discovers that Danielle was the cat.

A less serious Hitchcock which feels a bit dated nowadays, but it's not necessarily a bad thing. It could have benefited from tighter editing in the middle section, but it's a joyful glimpse into Riviera in the 50's and the luxurious fashion, boats and cars of it's era which are all photographed beautifully. Grant and Kelly are good and have a good chemistry, but at least from nowadays perspective their age difference is a bit distracting.

Grace Kelly is legendary. Damn. This is an excellent movie. The villian was obvious and one of the hinderances, although Grant knew all along. Some of the best color work I've ever seen done.
