War begets revenge. Victorious general, Titus Andronicus, returns to Rome with hostages: Tamora queen of the Goths and her sons. He orders the eldest hewn to appease the Roman dead. He declines the proffered emperor's crown, nominating Saturninus, the last ruler's venal elder son. Saturninus, to spite his brother Bassianus, demands the hand of Lavinia, Titus's daughter. When Bassianus, Lavinia, and Titus's sons flee in protest, Titus stands against them and slays one of his own... (imdb)

"Our mother is undone." "No, I've done your mother." OH SNAP! Verily, a jest by any other name would burn as sweet. Now eat your man pie.

Titus Andronicus isn't a Shakespeare play that I'm overly fond of, but this film manages to do more with the material than I'd imagined of it. Very visually engrossing.

Though not Shakespeare's best play, Julie Taymor really puts on a fantastic visual show that amps up the brutality and doesn't apologize for anything.

An interesting adaptation of an early Shakespeare play ("Titus Andronicus"). The original play is quite ridiculous and somewhat amateurish, with a near overload of gore and mutilation, and the film doesn't shy away from the material too much. Dialogue is delivered pretty much straight from the text, but the film uses bizarre anachronisms and surrealist asides to create an unusual yet vibrant fantasy world somewhere between ancient Rome and modern times. Overall a pretty interesting take.

Formiddably intense Shakespeare adaptation can't quite overcome the ugliness present in the original text, but Taymor's typically bold, original take on the subject matter (most intriguingly utilising a varied mix of production design from Roman costuming through to 90s punk rock) makes the end result never less than captivating. Hopkins is excellent in the lead (with a few sly winks to Hannibal Lector) but film belongs to Lange, in a chilling portrait of icy viciousness, arguably a career-best.

Engaging and overly long lingering on imagery over substance with silly dreamy sequences. Lots of pretty stuff to look at while a catalog of cruelty unspools incredible tortures in a wistful manner i can do without. An overdose of pain & suffering.

Roman general Titus Andronicus returns home triumphant from battle against the Goths and parades his captive, the Goth Queen Tamora, before the people and emperor of Rome. The emperor is suddenly smitten and marries her, making Titus' bitter but defeated enemy suddenly very powerful. Cue two hours of hysterical violence and wailing in sorrow as the two families heap endless misery and death upon each other. Brutal, bloody, and it has Jessica Lange showing off her 50 year old cans...nice.

Julie Taymor's debut film is an amazing anachronistic adaptation of a Shakespeare play, with a fantastic cast and haunting music by Elliot Goldenthal.

Shakespeare's most bloody and violent play has been masterfully adapted into an imaginary facist-world and it works perfectly. Everyone in the film is fantastic, especially Hopkins and Jessica Lange. The sets, costumes and art direction are nothing short of brilliant. One or two of the dreamish sequences don't sit quite right but aside from that it's masterful.

Good grim fun - who needs a modern slasher when you can have your gore dripping with poetry?

Horror just made creepier by any attempts of keeping tongue in cheek. Permanently on my list of most disturbing fictional things I've seen on tv or silver screen.

I wasn't familiar with the play Titus Andronicus, but I thought the story was pretty cool, as well as rather dark and twisted. I really enjoy Taymor's visual style, and while not as grandiose as her subsequent films, it was definitely on display here. I also thought the deliberately anachronistic elements were nice. All the performances were good, and I especially enjoyed Alan Cumming. I thought it was great, overall.

The play is so sleazy, stupid and sensational, you can't help but like it. Of the tragedies, it's the one you can't claim cultural cred for liking. It's Deathwish III in iambic pentameter, basically. The movie's pretty much the same, with a whole lot of unnecessary imagery thrown in your face. Is it any good? Not especially, but it is fun. Hopkins' channeling Hannibal Lecter at the end was especially neat and entirely appropriate.

With Shakespeare's infamous tale of severed appendages, Julie Taylor gives a completely unique take on the play. While this can be applauded, I can't escape the fact that half of it looks straight out of Monty Python's Flying Circus. Hopkins bleeds fire onto the screen, but when doesn't he?

On one level my love of Shakespeare enhances my feelings for this film and on another level my knowledge of the play makes me more critical about this film's shortcomings (and simplifications of the story and characters).

Does the best job of seamlessly blending technology from different eras that I've ever seen in a film. Hopkins' performance is great. The movie does seem to drag a little in places, but I still really enjoyed it.
