Considering the talent involved, this should have been much better. Instead, we have a story stuffed with clichés, flat characters, and an awkward 2D/3D animation mix. There are some striking visuals and funny lines here and there, but they aren't enough to save everything else. A forgettable missed opportunity.

I didn't see this until 2008, well after the raspberries died down, and I'm glad. It has some unique ideas, and typically good Bluth animation. I'm a sucker for the Cowboy Bebop-type setting, too. Unfortunately, the mix of CGI and traditional cel animation is awkward and some of the characters are very annoying.

The Don Bluth hand-drawn animation mixed with 3D CGI is different, but certainly not bad. The concept is brilliant, and so are some of the visuals. It owes a lot to A New Hope and The Wrath of Khan (including, perhaps, its over-reliance on archetypes and cliches), and while it's not nearly as great as either of its influences, it's definitely good.

Some fitfully impressive animation is the main star here (though there’s nothing here that outclasses anything in Bluth’s better films), but the jumbled and convoluted sci-fi story is difficult to become invested in. Made more difficult by Damon and Barrymore who are unusually stripped of all of their charisma – in fact, the entire cast sound bored and disconnected, with the exception of Lane who manages to make his sleazy letch at least marginally amusing.

This cult sci-fi film is often blamed for killing off Fox Animation Studios because of a poor advertising campaign for it. Or it could just be that it is rubbish. The 2D and 3D don't mesh and look awkward together, the soundtrack features rubbish pop-rock that doesn't suit the movie at all and the script, story and characters are all over the place.

I didn't expect this movie to be as bad as it was. The whole thing is full of plot holes and incredibly formulaic. The characters are all cardboard cutouts, while the story hurries along at breakneck pace. This is pointless.

Beautiful visual design, lovely animation, and a fairly plausible plot allow the star-packed cast to have what sounds like a lot of fun with their characters. It's a shame that the mistake of marketing this film as a kiddie cartoon sank its makers financially.

I really want to like this, you can tell how much effort went into it. Sadly, the animation style and awkward framerate don't do it for me, and the story was a poor man's star wars. Could make an interesting live action TV series… actually isn't that just Farscape?

There's a lot to enjoy here. The 3D animation is of its time, but the 2D is consistently gorgeous, with a magnificent solidity and detail to the world and its technology. The alien characters are all fun, combining Bluth-style designs with good performances. But Cale, our main character, is an absolute black hole of charisma, the most baseline, normie Matt Damon white boy protagonist in cinema, and he drags the other human characters down, too. I still enjoyed myself, but please, no more Cales.

There are a few bits here (like the ice meteors) that make you think this could have been a really strong movie. Unfortunately, it feels like the artwork was created and then a story was (attempted to be) written around it, filling it with completely flat characters and too many tropes from the genre.

What I enjoy most about this is its time capsule novelty. There’s something otherworldly about pre-2001 science fiction that’s brazenly harsh and gritty, all while buoyed by late 90s radio rock. It’s StarCraftian in choppiness and tone. Unfortunately this is mostly boring, and when Bluth’s character animation choices aren’t distracting, he’s sacrificing meaningful pacing. There is still a decent amount worth beholding, though—especially the ice ring sequence.

Underrated and largely overlooked at the time, Titan AE is a fun mix of unique looking animation, a space sci-fi setting, and punk rock style musical scores. The story isn't entirely originally but there are some unexpected twists and turns. More importantly, the movie is fun and reminds us that just because it's animated doesn't mean it can't be for adults, too.

This clearly falls in the failed promises category. I love me some fun animated sci-fi adventure. The animation looks nice and the premise is promosing. But the plot alas is a rushed mess. This is a movie that should have been longer so plot and character developments had more room to develop naturally for the viewer. My enjoyment of this was further reduced by one of the most terrible soundtracks. The 90s punk-rock song made my ears cry.

This is a movie I was rooting for the entire time I was watching it, too bad it betrayed me more often than not. It has a lot of interesting ideas and it uses its dated visual style to produce something that is genuinely good to look at. Watching this movie would make for a good zen exercise, because from the first frame to the last, I felt nothing. At no point did I feel any sense of scale or emotional investment. The characters have no consistency to their motivations whatsoever, least of all the antagonists. The incompetent sound mixing and dated soundtrack make it all worse. This whole film tries to paint a Don Bluth sheen on top of a formulaic, especially bleak Campbellian monomyth, and it made me root for the Drej.

Interesting space opera severely aided by Whedon's writing, incl. many allusions to Firefly (and too many to SW/ST). OST is weird as fuck, sporting a Green Day-vibe in the year 3000- not much has changed but the Earth was kind of blown up during the first 5 mins.. Weak direction and child friendly characters in a movie having several people die (a main character breaks his neck) ruins a lot.. Thus a "serious" work is destroyed by trying to target the wrong/all audiences half-heartedly.. CGI=Bad!

Science-fiction juvenilia, in Robert Heinlein vein (or for nonreaders, George Lucas vein). The self-described "last great hope" is hardly more than a juvenile himself (voice of Damon), and his foremost helpmate is, or sounds like, a displaced Valley Girl (drawling Barrymore). The animation somehow underscores the childishness and ignorability of it all.

I must admit I do have a little bit of a soft spot for this. Some plot holes aside, it's got some conceptually solid sci-fi, and much of the animation is impressive, bar some awkward hand-drawn/CGI mish-mash scenes. I've never been much of Don Bluth fan, but is actually a little bit of shame that this movies box office failure finished his movie making career.

Not terrible by any stretch. This is textbook sci-fi disaster screenwriting: sure it paints by numbers, but it uses a vibrant palate. What seems comparatively convenient or trite is only what is dictated by the dogma of the space novelty blockbuster, good and cost-effective, and never disappointing. But like anything made by circumstance and committee, it lacks that idiosyncratic flair that, ironically, makes it more memorable.
