"not-exactly-rich"-ard gere - from beau to bum. a classic street-musical in five acts: 45 minutes of loitering, exposition, more loitering, realization, reconciliation. sounds harsher than it's meant. it's basically well shot and acted and thankfully doesn't force any fake sympathies on you, but ultimately there isn't much to take away. no, that's not a homeless-pun. the ending was a nice touch.

Moverman does a good job of telling a sob story with an unusually low level of emotional manipulation. The very sparse exposition of the protagonist's past, particularly with relation to the daughter, is a blessing. Moverman lets him be a window to homeless life in New York and a critical (but thankfully not angry) glance at its welfare system. Perhaps the deepest aspect of the character is his denial, his insistence that he is "in between", his sense of entitlement. I enjoyed Gere in this.

Moverman's films always feel very well-researched, and this one is a slow, but engaging view into the life of a homeless guy. As for Gere, he's been off my radar for a long time, probably since 'Primal Fear'. But with 2012's 'Arbitrage' and this performance, he's back on it.

A homeless man (Richard Gere) spends his days wandering aimlessly around New York, trying to stay warm and intermittently trying to connect with his daughter (Jena Malone), while trying with only limited success to find some footing in his life. The meditative pacing may put some off, and the ending is a little too tidy for my tastes, but for the most part it's extremely compelling, with a refreshing breadth of scope and situation. Superior cinematography; generally well acted and written.

I really wanted to like this, but it was slow and often seemed to plod along aimlessly. It does however, effectively portray some of the despair of loss, losing ones way, the desperation of being homeless, and the frustration and helplessness of mental decline. But, following his sad existence was rather tedious by the end. Thankfully they ended it on a hopeful note.

Richard Gere doing some brilliant acting in a not so obvious movie. My review : http://opinion-as-a-moviefreak.blogspot.be/2017/01/time-out-of-mind-2014.html

Um, okay. There are much better things I wished I'd done rather than the time I wasted with this one, but que sera, I guess.
