1979 was just a total clusterfuck of time traveling baddies. Dracula AND Jack the Ripper well that was really it but phew wouldnt want to meet them in a disco drenched alley. Lol his jump forward in time is almost as big as 1979 to today (I said almost I'm not a math scientist) Just wanna watch little malcolm mcdowell impressed by San Francisco

This is a cool post-Star Wars late 70's fantasy/sci-fi flick that mixes a nice concept & wholesome story. McDowel's fish out of water moments in San Francisco are fun and Mary Steenburgen's naturally great at playing ladies who don't listen to time travelers. But it's David Warner's movie as his villainous voice sells Jack the Ripper explaining a philosophy of how violence (out of place in the Victorian era) fits in a modern world. Recommended and obviously an influence on Quentin Tarantino.

This film definitely has it's weaknesses, but I just love it. Malcolm McDowell is so sweet and charming - and David Warner is the very manifestation of Jack the Ripper. It's David Warner's showcase role, in my opinion.
Great b-movie fun!

With a plot like that, how the hell could I not want to see this? The film has its fair share of problems though. Mostly to do with pacing. In the middle of trying to find Jack the Ripper, Wells has a romance with a woman he meets, and it just feels a bit weird. It's all taken a bit too seriously sometimes. Add bad visual effects and pretty lame action sequences, and you've got a pretty average movie. Nevertheless, I still enjoyed the ride, and I don't think I wasted my time at all.

David Warner is great in this otherwise average 70's sci-fi.

David warner steals the show as Jack the ripper, who steals HG Wells time machine and continues on his merry way in 70's San Fran. I often wonder what Jack would've made of the Village People...

Hot off writing the clever Sherlock-Holmes-meets-Sigmund-Freud "Seven-per-Cent Solution", Nicholas Meyer wrote and directed this light adventure that pits Wells against the Ripper in 1979 San Francisco. McDowell meets and romances Mary Steenburgen and frankly doesn't seem to invest a lot of urgency in stopping Warner, but it's a lot of fun if you don't invest too much thought in it. It's easy to see why this got Meyer "Star Trek II".

An interesting idea that starts off very well only to lose some steam and creativity around the halfway mark.

What a delightful little film. The trio that makes up the cast are each charming in their own way: Malcolm McDowell is perfect as H.G. Wells, Steenburgen is once again proving herself as the sweetest person in cinema, and David Warner plays version of Jack the Ripper that fittingly seems to be more from the 1970's than any time in the century before. Rewatch. I like the premise of Jack the Ripper traveling through time. The story makes no sense (why 1979?) and the characters make silly decisions (too many risks when you have a time machine). McDowell and Steenburgen make an intriguing couple, though it was a stretch to have them go from strangers to lovers. We need more time travel love stories a la Somewhere in Time. Fav scene: chase down the outside elevators, the escalator, and then outside San Francisco.

McDowell and Warner are great. The film was quite funny immediately after the arrival in San Francisco, and at various instances afterwards. Horrendously outdated visual effects. Many faults in the writing too, although gripping pre-finale. An enjoyable film, but nothing great.

It hasn't aged all that well, but it is cute and has a really interesting "high concept."

After seeing the premise of this movie, how could I not watch it. Malcolm McDowell is acting the damn fool, and Mary Steenbergen falls in love with YET ANOTHER time traveller. I kind of didn't like how quickly H.G. Wells got used to the future. He should have been staring at sky scrapers and cars for a larger proportion of the movie. And he DRIVES at the end? Ugh, that's stupid. Basically, the film doesn't live up to its amazing premise, and becomes run of the mill schlock.

+ GOOD: Mostly all good acting, especially the lead character, nice job showing how HG was really intrigued by all the new technology ; - BAD: Seemed more like a women's lib movie, pushed that theme way too hard and not subtle in the least - Primary female lead wasn't a good actress, overemoted - Should of explained his logic more on fixing events, why not just go back in time before the guy stole the machine? - Early on, focus on future utopia vs human nature, but didn't explore it later.

So the real H.G. Wells invents a time machine in his down time, but before the poor sod could test it out himself, his dinner guest (Jack the Ripper!) hops in it and takes off for 1979 Los Angeles with Wells hot on his tail. Sound like a can't miss? Oh, it can. This is, tonally, one of the most fucked up movies I've ever seen. Slapsticky sight gags. Butchered prostitutes. Fish-out-of-water gags on par with "Encino Man". Actual dialogue: "I'm no a dyke." What in god's name is this supposed to be?

Had I seen this as a kid I'm sure it'd be a favorite, but as an adult I have to wonder who hired Meyers for S. Trek 2? I've never seen Steenburgen give a bad performance before but he CHOOSES closeups where she looks hypnotized, not terrified & McDowell NEVER looks awed by the future. Meyers also makes the score so loud it's distracting at times. It's also got way more plotholes than most time travel flicks. If Steenburgen's still alive the day after she was "killed", why take her back in time?

I watched this as a double bill with 1960's The Time Machine and liked this one slightly more. It has an absolutely bonkers premise and is a great deal of fun. McDowell gives a fantastic observant performance as H.G. Wells. The romance is all a bit strange, as it's hard to imagine what Steenberger sees in McDowell's character, who (being from 1893 in 1979) knows nothing about anything and behaves totally bizarrely for the time. Pretty good stuff.

Dá pra ver porque deram a direção de A Ira de Kahn para o Meyer e colocaram a Mary Steenburgen (nunca tinha notado o quanto ela se parece a Kate Bush!) no De Volta para o Futuro 3, mas uma das frases finais me incomodou deveras: a respeito de todas as épocas são horrivelmente iguais e só o amor nos faria viver através delas, só um homem branco sem a mínima consciência diria isso. based on the cast, director, & the synopsis, i definitely let my expectations for this film get wildly out of hand. the cast certainly comes through. warner is great, mcdowell does innocence surprisingly well. the problem is that it drags pretty badly. i also expected more humor, or at least a sense of tongue-in-cheek. also, something is missing in the threat and menace of jack the ripper. i'm not suggesting more graphic murders, but something def missing. still an ok film for fans of the cast

Finally someone is willing to sit down and explain the intricacies of time travel to me in layman term. Here's how it breaks down: when you rotate west it sends you to the future, east makes you back in time. Simple. Now onto magnets and global warming...

Nice retelling of The Time Machine story, with a little Jack the Ripper thrown in. The book this is based on is great, so the movie suffers a little in comparison.
