Not the best use of a $60 million budget, frankly. The frame story of a literary scholar discovering a djinn sets up high expectations for the film's story that it didn't deliver on, and there's just a lot of talking in between Miller's imaginative visual effects set pieces. Swinton and Elba make the best of the script, but they were limited in what they could achieve.

A celebration of storytelling as art, and the joy of actual experience that soon bleeds into legend, fable, myth - and common history, stories uncannily known yet left unspoken. A lot can (and should) be said for the film’s last half: a story half-finished, red threads fading into darkness. It’s a ‘Ghost and Mrs Muir’ for our age of rational wonderment, a metaphor for magical wondering itself, asking ever so politely, when the fantastic is invited to shape our selves, what becomes of us?

It would have been nice if a movie ostensibly about storytelling told more exciting stories. Visually, it was gorgeous. But it failed to make me care about any of the characters. And, without spoilers, that first wish was unfair and cruel, and yet she somehow gets away with it in the filmmakers eyes, despite some late token remorse.

When the lead says she's going to tell her story as a "fairy tale" it's a disclaimer/buyer beware because what else could this be? It's an anthology of genie stories, but the only one to care about is the framing one - which ends w/ no insights or surprise. The other 3 can't help but end in unsatisfying ways b/c they tell us nothing new about Elba's genie AND feature other characters we don't care about. It's also distracting to have white actors cast in mostly Arab settings w/ no explanation.

I really liked the ideas. It's about the role of stories in life and also about love and companionship. It's also about the idea of wishing for things and what we ultimately have the right to demand from other people. The pace lagged occasionally for me, but I'm very forgiving of a film this packed with ideas and ultimately so intriguingly open ended.

Three Thousand Years of Longing is first and foremost a celebration of storytelling, an opportunity for one of cinema’s most unrestrained stylists to cut loose on Arabian Nights tales. But the contemporary setting allows Miller to dig into the purpose of storytelling itself, how it still helps us account for a world that’s now much more graspable to us than it was even a century ago. The biggest mystery left is love, and that’s where Alithea and the Djinn inevitably find themselves.

It was just okay; visually it had some really high points (the first appearance of Elba as Djinn particularly) and they got the feeling of Harem right (at least from a local point of view); the 1001 Nights thing is a bit too familiar for me to get engorged by it; but you don't get to see a movie that is in a hotel that you have actually stayed in that much; that was particularly enjoyable.

After a beguiling first act, this film collapses under the weight of its own lofty expectations. Without warning, it starts drivelling confused banalities about love & desire with the unflappable confidence of someone who apparently "knows what all women want." Then it transforms into a feeble satire of modernity, nationalism, xenophobia, assimilation--but it's all rushed, cursorily touched on, as if to fulfill some requirement. If only this film focused on Act 1's magic-filled Ottoman Empire.

The fact that George Miller was given sixty million dollars to make *this* movie is such an insane con that I have no choice but to respect it! Anything this weird and audacious is always going to win my affections, and the fact that this gussied-up art movie is being rolled out for wide audiences is incredibly amusing to me. I was more intrigued by this than profoundly moved, but the last scene is so lovely and romantic that it makes everything beforehand feel more beautiful in retrospect.

A woman whose life is dedicated to intellectual pursuits (Alitheia) has the chance to fulfil her true desires: are they for more knowledge, or does she prefer to have the love (etc.) of a big black man? Performances are fine, but for a long time the engine struggles to turn over. Eventually things warm up and the result is perhaps less than the filmmakers hoped for, but still winds up a fairly enjoyable diversion about female desire and the inadvisability of making romantic or emotional demands.

Innovative. I loved the dichotomy of the main timeline's hotel room and robes going up against the extravagant story telling. It's a vibrant, wise, melancholic movie that just doesn't land the third act quite right.

Vibrant and exquisitely photographed with magical SFX. Elba and Swinton's performances make for a witty captivating drama. Wants for a more sophisticated finale and char. drama after elaborate storytelling preceding it - the film handwaves tonally dissonant character flaws (and botches the wishes entirely). Kudos to Elba for appropriate pathos despite a lacking screenplay. Nonetheless, brief third act aside, an easy recommendation for all romantics wishing for a little magic in their reality.

Bem bonito. Despite the fascinating storytelling and immersive world-building in “Three Thousand Years of Longing,” the poor pacing and lack of emotional payoff in the final act make it fall short of Miller's previous efforts. It's a solid film, but not quite one of his best.

At it's core it's an intellectual/philosophical fairytale. A competently made movie, but based on my personal preferences just not my thing. Despite being about storytelling I found it to be mostly disengaging. The performances are for the most part serviceable, the visuals are good in spots, and given the budget I appreciate the giant risk that a concept like this is. I get how this could be someone's jam, but I just find these sorts of pontification movies to be rather dull usually.

It’s thrillingly immersive - thanks to strong central performances and terrific sound design - utterly unique, and awfully Orientalist (that purebred Italian Matteo Bocelli - yeah, son of that Bocelli - plays an Ottoman prince is indicative of the good faith of its yarn spinning). Ignorant and othering, it’s also singular and creative. A weird one for sure.

There's a great deal going on with this lavish story about stories that traverses many different cultures and time periods. Watching all this made me feel like a child having it all wash over me, yet once we hit the last third, there really isn't a a satisfying conclusion to all this bigness -- it just indulges in some "oi, don't be racist" woke-ism, a little tragedy in the main narrative, and then ends on "love is the answer" or something.

Three Thousand Years of Longing is a weird film that combines the blockbuster spectacle of Aladdin, the meta-spirit of an independent fill, and the ending of cheap discount-bin romance novel. The story feels a little derivative of Arabian Nights, but Miller's lush visuals & steady pacing make it an enjoyable watch. I wasn't certain which way the plot would go, though I was left feeling it could go further or offer more. Elba & Swinton are good, though their accents... Good use of Turkish actors.

I call it LITE OF PI. Whilst gorging on the sumptuous visuals, you may overlook the lack of depth and chemistry in the film's central relationship. Elba and Swinton are solid, but the film spends so too time on convoluted moral lessons, and rushes through some of the more fascinating questions it poses.

These stories are all interesting, and they’re enhanced by overarching story of the djinn’s loneliness and longing for freedom. And it surprisingly turns into a love story, that ends up being sweet and charming. It’s a very interesting, ambitious fantasy love story, with visual flair and an epic scope.
