The film is a fairly standard Naruse drama filled with music and tragedy. The ending however was a bit of a gut punch and elevated the film for me a bit.

There is a underlined sadness through the entire movie, with only brief moments trying to lighten the mood, but even those moments had a sweet sadness to them. This was a rather depressing and odd film from Mikio Naruse. At times it's hard to really get close to whats going on in their lives and a lot of loose ends stay loose leaving it to the imagination of the viewer what their destinies are. And with the continued blue note one can only guess the worst in all cases.

"Even at a relatively brief 64 minutes, it feels as if Three Sisters explores a lifetime of heartache and tragedy." - Keith Uhlich
