I have never experienced a soundtrack more devoted to taking me out of my film viewing experience. I've had a five year old jump on my head while I was trying to watch The Neverending Story. I've sat in-between my wife and sister having nonstop conversation during Sicario: Day of the Frivolosa Charla. I watched a man have a seizure in a movie theater. I found out my best friend's dad died while I was stuck watching an action movie with all kinds of senseless death. This soundtrack was the worst.

I enjoyed this quite a bit actually. The eree music and strange sense of humour and acting worked for and got some laughs out of me. The leads are both quite good, and I genuinely felt for the relationship towards the final act. I will for sure be looking out for more movies by Cory Finley. Good twists and a nice dark tone if you're looking for something among those lines. Overall this was a good movie.

An very dark comedy about two deranged rich girls. The subtle writing was very good and I liked how they used sound to set the mood. I quite enjoyed the quirky performances. unexpected plot turns and dialog. Some of the pacing was quite slow. Most of it was unusual, interesting and fun to watch, but the ending seemed a little cheap.

this kind of stuff is right up my alley. darkly fun concept, solid, at times great cinematography and the girls managed to up the ante by nailing their respective roles. hope to see more from finley. in hindsight, yelchin as a valet (a man who parks cars for a living) was a pretty messed up note to go out on.

Dark and slower than I expected. It works in a sense since the film relies heavily on the character development and dialogue. The score played a significant role that helps carry the film. I never became deeply invested in either characters, but admire the satirical take at a privileged sociopath and one who claims zero emotion although we get a glimpse of her empathy towards Lily in the end. Not bad for a directorial debut.

It's a little slow but the patient pace eventually fits really nicely into the overall unnerving, dryly/darkly witty atmosphere (see the amazing slow-zoom one-take shot with Amanda sleeping on the couch). The leads are excellent, and their respective arcs revealed at the end were a nice surprise for a more mood-oriented film, even if they didn't feel quite justified. Wonderful cinematography and careful use of music and sound throughout add more artistic flair to this white-collar weirdness.

Strong dialogue, performance, and tone carries patient interest through most of the film's length; the girls' exchanges are a sardonic pleasure, supported by polished cinematography and sound. However, the lack of commitment to its arthouse ending leaves the whole feeling a little dichotomous; it's as strongly done as the rest of the film, but of a different tonealmost to the scale of genreand this inconsistency tripped up my enjoyment of the film a little.

Thoroughbreds' strength lies with the performances from Taylor-Joy and Cooke, and a script that is as contemplative as it is dark. The cinematography, pace, and sound are all well-curated to enhance the uneasiness in the direction the friendship takes. Unfortunately, I couldn't get on board with the characters' weak motivation, nor the film's celebration of friendship. Perhaps I was expecting more sardonic humour to balance the emotional drama.

It has an oppressive atmosphere and both leads do well with what they are given. The direction is great: a Hitchcockian sense of tension and suspense, solid usage of lighting and sound (seriously cool soundtrack) to build the mood. It even made me laugh a few times. And yet despite all the fantastic elements I did not love it. Technically efficient in all regards except its inability to make me care for them. At first I thought it was an interesting relationship but it lost me a bit.

Thoroughbreds is a fantastic movie. It delivers pretty much everything I wanted from it, offering tons of pitch-black laughs, witty dialogue, and noir thrills all in a tight, 90-minute package. The actorsparticularly Olivia Cooke and Anya Taylor-Joyare fantastic, the writing is solid, and while its satire elements might not be as deep or biting as some of its inspirations, it's telling an engaging and funny enough story that it's hard to care a whole lot. What's there is sufficient.

Unpredictable & surprising until the end. Great performances from the 2 leads esp Cooke. I even liked the discordant score which draws attention to itself. So why don't I rate this higher? One of the leads goes from not relatable to at least sympathetic & the other from potentially relatable to loathsome. The film isn't interested in having the viewer understand why the characters do what they do so it's an unexpected & compelling ride but would only resonate w/ the Jeffrey Dahmers of the world.

This was honestly almost a perfect movie for me. I've been wanting to see this movie for almost a year, so my expectations were pretty high. I could literally watch Anya Taylor-Joy and Olivia Cooke for hours. The dark and witty humor was brought to life by the two leads. Olivia Cooke really stood out to me. Haven't seen her in much, but hopefully that will change. Would definitely recommend this movie to anyone who likes dark comedies. You have to have a certain sense of humor to like it.

I would watch 2 hours of insurance commercials if Anya Ayalor-Joy was in them (preferably sacrificing babies to goat demons), so imagine my excitement when I saw a poster claiming this film to be "Heathers meets American Psycho." Now imagine my disappointment when, upon watching said film, I learned 2 hours of insurance commercials would have proven Milton's Paradise to the Dante's Hell of pretentious twats whining about unpredictable nothings while lounging about a white collar wet dream.

A wonderful experimental setup to explore nothing less than human nature. What is good? The ultimate altruist (or at least presentes herself) as a woman without feelings. And here the House of Cards references in casting, narrative devices and lightning make a lot of sense: Thoroughbreds is the Anti-HoC's. Here, the emptiness (of class, youth, technology) is not something to exploit - it's a chance for reinvention. What an interesting angle on things that usually lead to banality (like HoC's).

A much better dark comedy than it is a thriller (honestly I don’t really get how it’s classified as one at all) but still very enjoyable. Two perfect leads and a tone that rightfully satirises the privilege of the characters while understanding that they can’t be blamed for their upbringing.

Excellent black comic thriller delivers some of the best stylised patter this side of Sorkin (or even Hawks) thanks to a sharp screenplay, deliciously tart, acerbic performances from Cooke and Taylor-Joy, and scene stealing work from a hilariously addled Yelchin (RIP). The plot is definitely a golden oldie, but this cast and director proves there's life in the old girl yet; an ominous and unsettling soundtrack (musical and otherwise) is the icing on the cake.

The initial setup as a high-class coldblooded revenge drama is promising. Some of the black humour hits the right spot but mostly the latter part of the film fails to live up to the expectations it has set. Left me more disappointed than enthused by the film's few enchanting qualities.

This was a pretty impressive debut from writer/director Cory Finley. His confidence behind the camera was on screen, for sure. The story's fairly simple, but not predictable, which I really enjoyed. The lead actors were both excellent, and I'll never get tired of looking at Anya Taylor-Joy's face. It was also really great to see Anton Yelchin again, but it's always really sad, too - we lost a really unique actor. Anyway, the movie was dark & funny & sad & smart and I liked it a lot.

Thoroughbreds is a quick and to the point darkly comedic and suspenseful drama. It has a very keen minimalistic style. The real core of the film however is the two wonderful performances by Olivia Cooke, and Anya Taylor-Joy. Cooke in particular plays her character spectacularly. My only real complaint is that while the stepdad is a real unlikable hard ass, I don't think they paint him as a big enough piece of shit to where they'd contemplate killing him.

This is quite a dark film - thematically speaking and comedically speaking of course - its certainly dialogue heavy. It's quite atmospheric at times and it leaves you wondering what's going to happen when. It reminded me a bit of 'Cruel Intentions'. It features a good cast, although it isn't a particularly thrilling film as such, it has a slow plot pace and won't suit all. If this is your sort of thing then yes, it is worth seeing.

Cooke and Taylor-Joy are ... well, a Joy in this dark and usual tale of two teenagers who contemplate committing a murder. The normally excellent Yelchin, in his final role before his tragic death, doesn't really work for me here but it's all about the two leads anyway. The ending was unfortunately weak for me personally and was a key factor in reducing my rating a few points, but it may work better for others. Recommended if you're in the mood for something a bit darker and different.

Thoroughbreds is a fascinating genre-bending film. Although it never elicited a genuine laugh from me there is a definite feeling of dark comedy woven throughout. The script did something right because I could never predict what would happen next and the two leads the very good. However, the real shame is that Anton Yelchin steals every scene and we won't ever get to see him again. What a talent for such a young and short career.

Very little plot here, but that's ok for a film like this. The reason for watching is the dynamic between the two leads. Call it female bonding if you must, but this is a toxic friendship that should have never happened. Nothing good could have come from these two girls entering each other's worlds....but here we are. The style, music directing and acting are all on point, although Anton Yelchin's character seemed unnecessary, as the outcome would have remained the same regardless.

An amoral character incapable of emotion serves as a conduit for the worst impulses of an initially ambiguously angry protagonist to decreasingly reassuring results. The film closes with the amoral character recounting an eerily poetic dream where the eventual self-absorbed death of the entire species results in a net improvement in the world. This is not a satire of the rich, but an unflattering open question about the value of humanity in the face of a boundless capacity for selfish harm.

The bone-dry THOROUGHBREDS is not the sardonic teen satire that its ads, its premise, and its meticulously curated series of costumes would suggest. At its core, the film is more HEAVENLY CREATURES than HEATHERS, unpacking a friendship that embraces an extreme level of honesty, with disturbing implications. Despite its terrific performances and assured direction, the movie can't quite nail its tricky tone, as its overpowering stolidity left me cold and temporarily blind to its strengths.
