Biography

At the edge of adolescence, Tracy is a smart straight-A student--if not a little naive (it seems...she smokes and she cuts to alleviate the emotional pain she suffers from having a broken home and hating her mom's boyfriend, Brady.) When she befriends Evie, the most popular and beautiful girl in school, Evie leads Tracy down a path of sex, drugs and petty crime (like stealing money from purses and from stores)... (imdb)

I literally shot this movie. Me and my friend Wes watched it, and his dad is a cop, and after we watched the movie we said to his dad, "We need your gun to shoot a movie" and his dad said, "That's ridiculous" then we showed him like ten minutes of it and he pulled it out of the DVD player and took it, case and all, to the backyard. He gave us protective goggles and earplugs and handed us a gun with bullets in it. I put 3 in, Wes put the rest of the clip. His dad said, "God rest our souls."

Once you get over the "kids aren't as innocent as they seem" gimmick (which has been covered many times before), this movie doesn't really have much to offer.

An unrealistic representation of the 'bad kid' lifestyle. No thirteen year olds are doing this kind of thing! Maybe 14 year olds.

A respectably made cautionary film if more than a little bit over-the-top in both concept and execution. Has good performances, but it withers out into a limp anticlimax.

Wonder what your life would have been like if you'd have known all about sex, drugs and crime at the age of 13?? Would that be a nice life to look back on? Great movie.

Genuinely original indie. Performances are uniformly sparkling. Spot-on characters and all-too-real details come from director/co-writer Hardwicke's collaboration with the then 13-year-old Reed--whom she met while dating Reed's father--the real-life good girl of the story.

I was so happy that I watched Thirteen, even if its story wasn't a joyous one. It was just such a good film that I will probably watch it again really soon. The acting was great, the writing kept me in the heads of the lead characters, and I sometimes forgot that I was watching a film. I was fully immersed, and only noticed the relatively minor problems after it concluded. Thirteen is great and I think you should go seek it out right now.

At times it seems to pluck at something frightening real and at other times it's laying it all on so thick that you find it hard to swallow a message of innocence lost. Decent-ish, disturbing in parts, but a little melodramatic.

This movie makes me want to curl up in my mom's lap, play with dolls, and make believe. I yearn for a child's innocence so that I don't have to be so disturbed by the fact that this film's fiction is for many teenage girls a living reality.

This is a very intense and rough take on a coming of age movie. Super performances from both Hunter and Wood in particular. I have no knowledge what so ever to whether or not this could be an actual response from a thirteen year old, but I still felt that the whole "transition" in the beginning was a bit rushed. Other than that I was spellbound throughout. *Good

Kids filtered through a hysterical, overdramatic lens with an aesthetic that looks like those you wouldn’t download a car ads. At its best when it’s the girls traversing around the city and at it’s worst (best?) when it’s trying to make you feel anything. No bras. No panties. Once I make my under appreciated coming of age canon it’s over for you hoes.

Teenagers can do everything to get some attention. Directors must make very good movie to get the fame and fortune. Hardwicke has succeeded here, assisted by the brilliant Nikki Reed who played "bad girl" Evie.

Grim, troubling coming of ager blessedly lacks the tidy resolution that these sort of films usually require; if Wood and Reed never quite convince as 13 year olds, Reed's screenplay fairly vibrates with first-hand honesty (though the prospect of real 13 year olds portraying the events here may have been too tough to take). Stolen by Hunter's heartbreaking performance as a not inattentive parent, but an almost fatally distracted one; her rich characterisation could have sustained its own film!

Top badass moment? A surprisingly tough question in this case. It's a total cop out I know, but I may as well go for flawed mum Melanie. Considering everything, she really didn't do too badly in the end. (Sorry, this is just so boring; please, seriously, I'm normally much better than this, but I think I just crossed the line between "marginally ok" and "crappy drivel". No cats, chainsaw or decapitations.

If you are willing to suffer through a bunch of teenage abuse, then watch this uncomfortable movie. Sure, the girls and the story feel real, but the whole thing was long and painful. There is no insight at all as to what was wrong, nor anything about how to help a girl in that situation. Just a close up look at the secrecy, pain, stupidity and frustration of it all. I was really hoping to get more from this film. The acting was good, but the movie was not.

You have to admire Catherine Hardwicke for working hard to make a film with a young female protagonist. Unfortunately, although the intentions are good, the film seems to almost glorify the "bad behaviors" within, and the writing just isn't good enough to get the point across. You have to give her points for trying though.

I suppose the fact that it was written by a teenager explains the complete lack of restraint, but it ultimately ends up hurting the film. It's too in your face with everything it throws out and you end up losing sympathy for the characters. It's a shame too because this is the kind of raw portrait of teenage life that some people really need to see.
