The film is based on the eponymous book by Mikhail Sholokhov. Action is set in Russia in July of 1942 during the Second World War. The advancing Nazi Armies are approaching Stalingrad. The battles scenes are on a very large and impressive scale, but it does not really sufficiently escape war-movie clichés, even though it differs from Hollywood formula by not building to a climactic fight and instead coming to a sombre conclusion of the “we will never forget your sacrifice” type.
