This movie was great. And not because of the sci-fi elements (good, but nothing spectacular) or the social commentary (same). But the tone was phenomenal. It jumped from gritty to goofy and from funny to scary without ever missing a beat. This is probably my favorite work by Jamie Foxx since In Living Color (high praise). I literally did not know it was John Boyega until the credits rolled. And Parris rounded out the leading trio with fantastic pathos. Highly recommended.

Black THEY LIVE with an appealing vibe but not quite funny enough and the photography seems strangely dark.

fun movie but i'm sure grad school people looking for a film to work on could destroy the fun part in a second (every single insight you might have into this film thru frankfurt school has been said before mate, just enjoy the movie if you're just a parrot)

Modern Blaxploitation. Excellent work from the leads, but it really went downhill in the second half. They couldn't pull off something more unique or meaningful in the end, and just sort of descended into more of the exact same types of tropes and stereotypes they were initially satirizing.

This is the movie "Us" wanted and tried to be. Yeah the message isn't subtle but it doesn't hurt the movie. Quite the opposite actually, it digs deep into the well of classic blaxploitation, updated to modern audiences and social issues.

Better than expected. If they lopped off half an hour, scaled back the exposition dumps a bit, and finessed a couple of those twist/reveal moments to make them more effectively surprising, then this would be a stronger and tighter piece of work

Perhaps a bit too calculated in its desperate attempt to mirror Peele and other recent and not so recent conspiracy thrillers, while trying to pull off a blaxploitation satire, and it's pretty cool and fun for a while, then the second half comes in and it just gets too easy and derivative. Cast is awesome, though.

The blaxploitation and eighties aesthetics give the movie a pretty great look and feel, and the characters are good (Foxx as a pimp is an absolute riot) but the movie suffers from an excess of ideas that lead to an uneven, muddled plot.

As with almost every conspiracy thriller I’ve seen, this one gets less and less interesting the more of the conspiracy is revealed. Which is a shame, as it wastes three magnetic lead performances, delivering impish dialogue with just the right amount of swagger. Combine that with a hazy, B-movie cinematography that gives the movie the vibe that just about anything can happen, and you have the opportunity for something special. Instead, predictable plot turns sink this charismatic package.

Typical sci-fi tropes dressed up in a weirdly incoherent package. Some of the performances are fun, but I could feel this evaporating from my mind in real-time.

A great trio of actors tackles a goofy sci-fi scenario with some clever social commentary. Surprise bad guy reveal was hella fun. Never underestimate Jamie Foxx's comedy potential.

They Cloned Tyrone just didn't work for me. The antagonist's central reasoning is assimilation over annihilation, which inexplicably boils down to mind control and manipulation. For the first two acts, I wasn't sure if the film was satirising African-American stereotypes or people's attitude towards it. The characters are largely noisy, brash and chaotic. The cast do a great job of presenting the zany screenplay, but the ending is lacklustre. Plenty of funny moments, but horribly lit.

I had a lot of fun with this one. Juel Taylor, who draws strong performances from his three leads, seems to be the real deal, and I'm excited to see what he comes up with next.

Somewhat derivative meeting of two quietly ongoing strands of American cinema: socially conscious Black horror Ă la Jordan Peele and blaxploitation pastiche in the (sadly unequaled so far in terms of comedy or authenticity) style of 'Black Dynamite'. The seasoned cast acquit themselves well and the jokes mostly land, even if it's hard to shake the feeling that the film could have been much more incisive and caustic had it not been a Netflix joint.

There isn't anything particularly groundbreaking happening, but it is messy and fun social sci-fi. The three leads are excellent, and the mystery unravels nicely.

Gobsmacked that a film this fresh and imaginative could debut on a platform that has trained us to think of movies as assembly-line "content." It feels like a dream you have after a double feature of FOXY BROWN and THEY LIVE. Sly, smart social sci-fi with just the right amount of comedy.

John Boyega leads this sci-fi thriller which has a unique take on cloning and the future of society. The cast is incredible and the comedy blends well with the plot they are exploring. It is all conspiracy theories over the years rolled into one. There is a lot of political and social commentary in this film. It was a very well written movie and very easy to follow.

The production design is fantastic, and the performances are good, but I just don't know about this one. I think the writing just gets worse as the movie progresses. Despite the strong performances, the characters reveal themselves to be pretty thin. There's a twist that while I didn't see it coming, also wasn't all that exciting either. The whole thing just becomes generic and repetitive (and no I'm not talking about the Groundhog Day aspect the movie has).

it started out fine and was fun but in the end it got sus really quickly. So this is a pop cultural movie about black people being manipulated by a small secret group of people, which already as that already as antisemitic undertones, but thats fine if its desolved correctly, but then the Head-Scientist rambles on about something that sounds exactly like "the great exchange" conspircacy, that the alt-right and the identitarian right wing movements propagate. Kanye probably liked this.

A funny black comedy that has some societal commentary but doesn't over-inundate you with it. All three of the main leads put in great performances.

Since Get Out we've been inundated with clones—genre films with commentaries on African-American experiences. Here, the They Live vibe of era specific anxieties and conflicts should've made this cool. But the dialogue is one note (and rivals Tarantino's N-Bomb dropping). The conspiracy isn't well thought out or neatly executed. Boots Riley would've handled the political commentary better. And the characters are unlikable outside of their quest to uncover the plot. Avoid. A major disappointment.

Entertainingly pulpy with wonderful set and costume design that evokes 70s blacksploitation films. Humor wasn't terribly consistent and the satire/commentary was not as deep as Get Out or Sorry to Bother You, but it's a solid effort. Jamie Foxx's pimp character was a highlight throughout

It's surprisingly funny, in large part because of Slick, the pimp. A ridiculous and really entertaining performance. Boyega also gave a great performance, though his was more grounded. He was also the heart of the film. I dig the sci fi take on blaxploitation, and up until a certain point, the mystery (and ridiculousness) was really endearing. It petered out a little after that but never became boring. It blends entertainment and a message well.
