Highlights: Amy Poeler trying on different outfits and finally coming out in a suit of armor; Joel reacting to Poeler's cute, nervous stuttering with a terse "What the fuck are you saying?"; the look on the dinner couple's faces after Joel tells them about almost fucking his grandma; the final board meeting ("All hail Joel!"); Rudd's bad impression of two pedestrians passing by: "Hey, what's that?, I got a brand new phone, what is that an iPhone?, yeah I gotta go to the uh-- uh Apple store--".

Has its moments, but it could do with dialling down its self-awareness. This level of meta disdain for a genre would work well as a brief SNL short, but stretched to feature length it becomes an exercise in upending expectations and making fun of predictability so predictably that it's not just patting itself on the back, it's patting you on the back for anticipating all of its jokes.

I love most of the stars here, and I get that it's a spoof, but sometimes the jokes kind of felt flat to the point of getting irritatingly repetitive. This would've worked better as a sketch, maybe, but not a feature-long movie.

Instead of playing the rom-com spoof totally straight, the characters are constantly commenting obnoxiously on the tropes they're parodying. Yes, we know! It wears thin and cuts into the comedy. There are some funny moments, though, and it's hard to go wrong with Poehler and Rudd in an aggressively silly environment like this.

This is a funny send up of romantic comedies. The movie has a great ensemble cast and the two leads Amy Poehler and Paul Rudd work well together. There are plenty of laughs in this movie. Overall I would recommend this comedy.

I really appreciate that Wain approached They Came Together as more of a loving send-up of romantic comedies, rather than a mean spirited take down of them. While cast is clearly enjoying themselves and the film does get in some very funny moments, overall it just doesn't spoof rom-coms in an interesting way. For the film to work, it either needed to be funnier or sharper; preferably both. Unfortunately, it is reminiscent of the average romantic comedy in one way: it is utterly forgettable.

It's definitely uneven, but when the jokes hit they work really well. Some really great attention to detail in some of the directorial choices (i.e., going handheld camera for the "family drama" scene). If you're a fan of Wain and the State, you'll enjoy yourself.

A largely enjoyable spoof that keeps its head above water with thanks to the two leads. It manages to fire off a few solid gags during its runtime, but admittedly most of these are in the first 20 minutes. By the time "They Came Together" ends you'll be glad of its relatively brief runtime & will be thinking that it would've been better as a short. Over a full length the quality & tone of the gags, & the level of self-awareness varies erratically. Just manages not to outstay its welcome.

It's at its funniest and most poetically absurd when juggling irreconcilable cliches. Although it takes the form of satire, it's extremely good-natured, never bitter or smug, nor insulting or desperate.

Makes it nearly impossible to take romantic comedies seriously anymore, or at least let them keep getting away with this type of nonsense. This had to be made, and it had to be this on the nose.

I'm not a big fan of this kind of Airplane-style gag humour in the first place, but making fun of formulaic Hollywood rom coms is essentially shooting fish in a barrel and there's only a handful of moments where the film rises above the really obvious jokes and comes up with something more clever or surprising. I managed to sit through the whole thing because Paul and Amy are adorbz. (2/5)

It's not quite as irreverent and unusual as one might expect or hope for from Wain and Showalter, but it's still got a fair amount of bite. A surprising amount of the humor comes from taking tired, uninspired pot-shots at romantic comedies, and the shtick wears thin fairly quickly, but it's still amusing enough to warrant a look.

Viewed June 27, 2014. David Wain brings his delightfully off-kilter sensibility to the romantic comedy genre, knowingly and lovingly creating the lamest romcom ever and making it utterly hysterical in the process. Maybe it runs out of steam in the end, but the lead performances are so strong and the players that fill the margins so funny, that it doesn't really matter and ultimately adds up into another fantastic Wain comedy. Also, it's almost like New York City is a character, too. (two times)

I get it, it's a parody, but it's too conceited for me. I take particular offence at the mocking of 'You've Got Mail' (and thus also 'The Shop Around the Corner'); it seems that David Wain, like many others, completely misses the Stieglerian elements of that film. And the way the flash back structure is set up is taken directly from Woody Allen (I'm thinking 'Melinda and Melinda').

Looking below the surface parody: this film is an exercise in metacinema where the tone is simultaneously hilarious, nervous, and bleak as it knowingly rips the heart out of every terrible Hollywood Romance trope in existence. Yet, taken as a whole, the message is still hopeful as it aims to free the audience of that same unachievable perfect romance.

"You look like you just watched a comedy where the jokes came with the frequency and intensity of a taut thriller." Tell me about it. Absurdist self-conscious film that wants desperately to update corny romcoms by following a couple getting divorce telling their crazy love story to friends. Often silly, with some good gags Shannon as the crazy ex-husband being shot by the police, the amount of off-rails horny and stupid dialogues and situations but never very acomplished in its satirical ambitions.

The film is full of energy, has no bounds, and has really great jokes. What's most important is that the film made me laugh a lot, more than I expected it too. Even though I didn't really care about the characters I didn't really mind. I think I prefer a film like this that just rolls with it and doesn't pretend like we're really invested, except for comedic effect, unlike some other comedies. Definitely worth checking out. -a113er, https://redd.it/2rbds2

This was a complete surprise. What looked like a really generic rom-com was exactly that...except it was so self-aware. They Came Together ends up poking a ton of fun at romantic comedies in general. There's quite a few references to classic romantic comedies that make it so obvious. It generally works, even if some of them come from left field and/or can get tiring. Poehler and Rudd have great chemistry, though, so it's something worth watching.

Much like Childrens Hospital David Wain crafts a world where you can laugh at anything from simple puns to over the top raunchy sex jokes. Initially the jokes seem really bad, but they have this extremely campy tone to them that makes them kinda endearing. However, behind every bit of camp is something more subtle/nuanced. The audience is rewarded for paying attention to the surrounding bits of the movie as it can be meta in spots. Add in the brilliant cast and I'd definitely recommend this.

The cast, alone, is enough to entertain in this goofy farce on the rom-com genre. Its 80-some minute running time feels a bit long by the end, which is about how I feel at the end of a typical Saturday Night Live. Worth a look for fans of Wain and the crew, who seem to be having a lot of fun.

Jesus Christ, nearly unwatchable. They could have either gone for the sharp, cutting parody that just tears the genre to shreds, or for the absurd parody that makes the whole thing into one big farce. I think they think that they were making an absurd parody, but to my eyes they were just pointing out annoying shit that happens in other movies. That's not funny or interesting. We all know the story structure of romantic comedies. Stop it.

We all came together to watch this spoof, but left in separate directions. I'm very split on this film, on one hand I laughed a lot at several parts. On the other, there were quite a few jokes that fell flat and the ending was bordering on awful. I liked Paul Rudd a lot better than his romantic counterpart Amy Poehler. It doesn't hurt that I went to the same college and theater department as Rudd (plus he was wearing our school's shirt in this film)...

It tries to parody rom-coms but it just doesn't do a good job, ultimately. It sucks because I love seeing Rudd because he's charming as shit. I hate seeing him be in crap. It's almost a little too winky-winky to be that funny, and honestly, a lot of the more over-the-top shit doesn't work, like the dreadful part about wanting to fuck his grandma. It keeps piling up joke after joke that mostly don't work (though I chuckled a couple times) and doesn't really build a compelling narrative. Shallow.

Its hard to watch some romantic comedies at the best of times but when a film increases the cheesy dialogue and covers every single rom/com cliché to make fun of itself its horrible to watch. It doesn't help that all of the actors are fighting a losing battle with an unfunny script which is such a waste of some stellar comedy talent. This reminds me of films like 'Grown Ups' where they all seem to be having a great time making it but not thinking about the poor audience who sit through it.

It nails all the stereotypical elements and clichés that go on in those films, while actually kind of succeeding in being one itself. Its true strength is in its cast, particularly in the case of Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler, who are fantastic together. I could watch Poehler being silly all day. I wouldn't say it was absolutely hilarious from beginning to end, and some of the jokes do start to wear thin, but it still had me laughing more than most contemporary comedy films. Recommended.
