They Call Me Bruce?

Some f the humor is dated in this movie but there are some jokes that are still funny. The premise is good but the script has some weak and some good moments. Overall I would reccomedn this movie.

Dated comedy looks like it was shot in the 70's and sat on the shelf for years before being hastily released, but the real problem is that Hong never settles on a consistent comic style. It alternates haphazardly between deadpan humour and bad pun related gags reminiscent of a witless Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker mixed with corny sitcom jokes, and there are very few laughs, which is a shame because Yune was up to the task, and some attempt was made to subvert common Asian male stereotypes of the time.

I agree with Yiannos that there's some promise of subversion here, but the humor was too inconsistent. Yune flip-flops between genuine deadpan and Confucius-says humor. Too bad about Margaux Hemingway. Fav scene: Yune gets confronted in the alleyway by a group of thugs and gets a flashback to his grandfather telling him to use his brain, so he proceeds to trick the thugs into fighting each other while he sneaks away.

Dated but still fun. I probably would have enjoyed it more if I saw it in 1982.
