There's Always a Woman

I hate the male lead with a burning passion, fucking abusive asshole who constantly threatens to beat her (and actually grabs her forcefully by the arm and hair!), calls her dumb, tells her about a “woman’s place” fuck you she is amazing I hope he dies in a fire

They were really trying to make Melvyn Douglas the new Thin Man in 1938. He did Fast Company (1938) with MGM and here Colombia also tries a inspired rip-off of the series. His partner in crime solving is Joan Blondell. Not exactly partners. Just a frustrating marriage with them racing to figure out who did the murder. Mostly just clowning around. This is not exactly a brilliant comedy mystery, but much thanks to Blondell it's actually very entertaining.

The screenplay is a third-rate imitation of the "Thin Man" mix of screwball comedy and murder mystery. In spite of this, Douglas' urbanity and timing plus Blondell's charm and good sense almost make it work.
