There is something artificial about the atmosphere, along with the acting coming across a lot more one-dimensional than previous generations of great British acting. Bill Nighy the outstanding exception here. I miss the days when the actors were allowed to be characters and not just bricks in that dreamy narrative flow they often use nowadays. Not that they were totally strangled with especially the sweet moments coming off good. It was a sweet movie, so at least they got that right.

About 30 minutes too long. The only real good parts are Bill Nighy and Helen McCrory. Everything else is pretty boring.

I'm in two minds about the ending. I've never been a fan of bittersweetness, even though I do understand the poignancy. That aside, no one plays Bill Nighy better than Bill Nighy.

Despite a competent production, I vehemently disliked Their Finest. Nighy, Claffin and Arterton are all good actors, who all deliver good performances, the latter committing to a decent Welsh accent. The sycophantic writing and lethargic direction are what really bring this film down. Tortuously tedious throughout its runtime, this film's epitaph seems to suggest that women & the elderly need the disappearance of men to get their opportunity. Exasperation and boredom is all this film offered me.

Don't want to spoil anything, but 6 months later, I'm still angry about what they did to that one character. I think it was unnecessary. But I pretty much love everyone in this cast so it was okay, I guess...

I thought it was lovely and stirring. Gemma Arterton is always fabulous.

A bit clumsy, and many of the film's developments seem too convenient (e.g., the affair) or rushed (particularly the otherwise laudable genre-challenging twist), but it remains altogether a charming and clever film carried along by lovely performances from the three on the poster, and strong writing showcased primarily in Catrin Cole's unique and subtly powerful character.

Easiest way to describe this film would be: Meh. Nothing stands out, nothing picks interest, acts like a direct to dvd film. Only thing got me wondering seeing London during the war and how civil life went on during the era. And it wasn't depicted that well.

Some charming moments but a meandering script that should've taken the advice of some of its characters.
