Sci-fi, Suspense/Thriller

In grand "X-Files" manner, the film's storyline is being kept under wraps. This much can be revealed: It is a stand-alone story in the tradition of some of the show's most acclaimed and beloved episodes, and takes the complicated relationship between Fox Mulder (Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Anderson) in unexpected directions. Mulder continues his unshakable quest for the truth, and Scully, the passionate, ferociously intelligent physician, remains inextricably tied to Mulder's pursuits.

A tedious trudge which would bore even the most die-hard X-phile. The film has almost nothing paranormal going on, and feels like a bloated and forgettable episode of some police procedural. Mumbling Mulder and Serious Scully bear no relation to the curious, driven agents of the original series. They drag the film down to a morose bore-fest, abetted by the ever-present gloomy music and visuals. These ex-agents are desperately in need of a joke or two and a vacation to somewhere more colourful.

Chris Carter doesn't seem capable of escaping the X-Files format of old, and he's certainly not equipped to make his franchise step up to become a movie. So instead we're served a double-episode about a paedophile priest having visions of... an FBI agent because of.. uh... anyway, it's about Scully searching for faith and Mulder being right all the time - everything is at it was in the 90s. Thing is that we're not. And thank God for that!

I am very very very sad and disappointed. I was and still am a big fan of TX-F, but this movie is tragic. First half of the film a grey old fool is jigging around, babbling nonsenses and others are just staying around him and stare. Second half is more boring - neverending philosophizing about nothing between M and S. No action, no suspense, no horror, no aliens, no story, no question for the answers, no answers that you didn't already know 20min ago. I was near to tears-Carter is no more. :-(

I can't begin to describe how terrible this film is. Amanda Peet isn't even the worst of it, which is saying a lot. With every that is going on in the world, all the governmental misdeeds and conspiracies that could have been turned into movie material, they choose to make Russian organ smugglers the center of their plot? No aliens, no vast coverup, just a boring crime story with US agents as the good guys. It makes me wonder if the US government had a hand in financing this disaster.

What is this supposed to be? I mean, why would they do a feature-film length revival movie with a plot so lame and uninteresting it would at best be suitable for a single episode? And the tagline: I want to believe?? In what? Russians dealing with organs? Head transplantation-surgery? Gay romance? Where's the scale here that justifies an x-files movie? No conspiracies, no extraterrestrials, no nothing. The only alien artifact they inserted was xzibit, his presence was the biggest mystery of all.

Has the plot and production values of a sub-par episode of the show. None of the show's mythology is here, which isn't a bad thing as they never managed to turn that into anything coherent. Instead it's a very poor standalone story that failed to hold my interest. On a character level it adds nothing to Mulder or Scully's stories. Overall it feels like a unneccessary resurrection of the show that has nothing to say.

Essentially a double episode of the series, both aesthetically and story wise... which makes it good enough for TV in the mid-90s, but nothing near acceptable in this day 'n age. Especially the inclusion of ethical dilemmas (stem-cell research) and topical issues (pedophile clergy men) seem almost deliberately daft and low browed.

This was a story that needed to be told and worth making a movie for? It barely felt like an X-file at all, and the only supernatural element in the form of the psychic 'pedophile bad!' character vanishes halfway through. Waste of effort.

So someone told me this was about werewolves. When I found out there were only 10 mins left in the movie and I hadn't seen a werewolf my frustration began to grow. No werewolves or anything really too abnormal. It didn't even really seem like an X-Files case. It was long and boring, I could barely hold my attention. The ending came and I must have missed the climax. I figured with X-Files' big comeback the movie would actually be a little bit good.

A bad movie to top off the bad final seasons of the X-Files. Despite the "I Want To Believe" line being pulled from the iconic UFO poster, here it apparently refers to wanting to believe a child molesting priest. Almost all of the points are due to the final image of Scully and Mulder floating alone in a boat on the ocean <3

A simply baffling follow-up that shows no understanding of what made the show special. Why bring Mulder and Scully back only to keep them apart the whole movie? Why choose a boring, confusing plot that barely has a clear supernatural element? Why is it so fucking dour and joyless? How can this be entirely without suspense? How can the creator of The X Files have no understanding of The X Files? I like maybe two early scenes, but overall this is worse than any single episode I ever saw. Insanity.

The joy for me was going to be in connecting with these two characters again. It was going to have to involve some kind of character growth that made sense, and either a satisfactory resolution of the issues that compelled the characters in the past or a believable continuation of these same issues. So the story is secondary. The characters are primary. The characters' reactions to each other and to the developments in the plot are more than satisfying. I hope for a third film in the series.

Better than the first movie in some aspects and worse than the first in others. It doesn't touch upon the great wielding conspiracy that overshadowed the show's final seasons, this could be considered bad but personally it was a plus for me. As well, unlike the first X-Files film, it allows someone that hasn't followed the show to actually watch this an have an idea of what's going on. If you have watched the show it plays out like a good, not great, extended monster of the week episode.

10 years from the last film and the show has been off air for a while too, even making this film is unprecedented. has no show tie ins like the first movie did, so it is severely lacking in any way that would get minor x-files fans to appreciate this. when all is said and done it's an hour and forty minute long episode, which isn't that bad of a thing, but leaves you with no feeling of resolution in the grand scheme of things.

At least six years of perfecting and THIS comes out. Highly disappointed, as the only 'x-files' about this movie is Moulder and Scully. It's not so much as it is bad in any real way as it is so unbelievably average. I can't believe this is the movie that came like ten years after the success of the show; it's just an overlong episode that would have been as quickly forgotten as any of the others. There's no plot tie-ins to the overarching story of the series and there's nothing extra-terrestrial about it whatsoever. It was a complete let down, but that shouldn't come as a surprise.

A drawn out, perplexing story that tries to fit itself into the mythos of the series instead of becoming part of it on its own merits. It was okay. Like, about as good as an average episode of the show. But that also means it's not good enough for a movie - you need something better to justify that, I think. The first movie was much better. I was glad this one didn't involve any alien mythology stuff though. Still, the plot just wasn't that interesting. There was some good character stuff between Mulder and Scully, at least. Weird supporting cast though.

An episode - pardon, a film - that I enjoyed a lot. Truth be told not being part of the cannon works wonders in my book - the cannon was severely protracted, altered and evolved in 9 seasons in a way that didn't make too much sense any more, and frankly I didn't care much about anyway, while the monster of the week episodes were what the show was all about. And here we have a 2-hour long episode with a crazy good and memorable Billy Connolly, and once again great chemistry between the leads.

Entertaining thriller plays much better (and far more cinematically) than its predecessor, and even manages to mine some touching moments in the Mulder-Scully relationship, along with providing Connolly an interesting (if not always credible) supporting role as a pedophile priest (!) Directed inventively, and touching on some interesting theological and other ethical issues, the film emerges as a thought provoking entertainment, which can stand apart from the TV series which spawned it.

As happy as I am to see these characters back on screen, why bother bringing them back to tell THIS story? This barely even qualifies as an X-File, whose supernatural elements are religious-centric in order to make ham-fisted social commentary. It doesn't have the scope or intrigue worthy of a movie. I'd call it an extended episode, but most episodes are more rewarding than this. There's really no reason to watch this, even as a fan of the series. You're better off watching old classic episodes.

It's great seeing Mulder and Scully back on screen together, but the chemistry seems to have vanished. They seem uncomfortable around each other. Besides that, this movie has little-to-nothing to do with the TV series besides those two characters; the storyline doesn't involve the mythology of the series and the case being investigated is mildly supernatural. Hopefully, there is another entry in the series that actually picks up where the show left off.

Whether or not it's a film that runs rings around the X-Files series doesn't matter much. "I Want to Believe" isn't blockbuster material or a special effects extravaganza. It's a small film earning its keep with its two excellent characters played by two excellent actors. As a huge X-Files fan it was great to see the characters back. All the medical aspects of the movie seemed pretty weak to me and overall the story could have been stronger, but the interaction between M and S was interesting. There's a bit where Scully does stem cell research via Google, and I'm no expert but I wouldn't think that Google is the best resource for that (although I did a search myself and at least some of the sites in the film did pop up). Aside from a few silly bits, I thought that this was very good. Visually this is a strong and textured film with a beautiful and bleak snowy setting. I liked that the story doesn't involve massive government conspiracy. It's on a smaller scale, but still complex.
