Doesn't really work as a standalone movie, but it wasn't meant to - this one's for the fans (of which I am one). Do yourself a favor and watch seasons 1-5 of the show first.

Although they tried to make the transition between S5 and S6 as seamless as possible via the feature film, the movie still feels that its lacking from the fact they filmed it after S4. The story also feels overly long and really dragging at parts, as if the plot of an episode has been stretched to full feature length. Nevertheless, there were definitely strong moments in the film - as usual, the interaction and chemistry between Duchovny and Anderson is stellar and rarely matched in film and TV.

This movie was probably completely baffling to anyone who didn't have a working knowledge of the show. It doesn't let itself get bogged down with exposition, and while I'm thankful for that, I find it quite amazing that they let this movie into theaters. That said, it's not a great movie or anything, just a really solid, big budget mythology episode.

I used to be a big "X-Files" mark, and that peaked with this movie. I thought it was great, really. An extended episode of the show that didn't really lean heavily on the audience being deeply familiar with the series. Not a shabby sci-fi flick.

Great fun. I don't think this would be advised for anyone who isn't familiar with the show, despite the intentions of its creators to make a stand-alone film. Doesn't quite attain the pinnacle of the shows greatness, but it's close enough.

It's an easy pitch, coming right in over the mound. All you have to do is focus on the second half of the first season of "The X-Files." Nope, instead you zoom in on everything that went wrong with the later version, swing, and miss. Ooof.

It's certainly not a great movie but it is a close approximation of a longer X-Files episode with a much higher budget. That's alright for me but might not be good enough for everyone.

The beginning of the X-Files film franchise which never came to be is not nearly as bad as one would expect. Granted it is very difficult for the uninitiated to jump into. It very much relies on having seen the series before. The creepy atmosphere and conspiracy driven plot may win you over and hopefully have you binge the far superior TV Series.

If you are a fan of the television series you should like this film. David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson work well together in this movie, just like they do in the TV series. The script has some good moments. Overall I would recommend this film.

Carter manages the near-impossible task of summarizing the five seasons that precede the film in very neat fashion (a drunk Mulder confesses everything - and nothing - to a bartender) and introduces intriguing new mythology without getting too bogged down in it. Duchovny gets a lot of good one-liners, and he and Anderson are surrounded by great characters actors. It's business as usual, but more dramatic and with bigger production values... exactly how one should do a movie based on a tv series!

I knew I should have left it back in the 90s where it belonged, but reviewing this some 17 years down the road one thing in particular becomes very clear: There is an absurd mismatch between the characters behavior and the world they occupy, most notably of cause in Scully's insisting denial of the supernatual, but also very much present in all other major characters, who seem too preoccupied with mundane intrigues and two dimensional story arcs to register the intergalactic plot at hand.

Probably completely unintelligible if you've not seen the series. A lot of not much happens. It's not confusing if you know the TV plot but its explanations are still pretty slim and the ending just feels a bit ridiculous. Idk it's ok but not great

This is a perfectly acceptable movie adaption of the series. Unfortunately it does lose some of the the qualities that made the series so great in the transition to the big screen, but when you hold it up against that piece of crap they put out in the late 00's, it almost seems like The Godfather. It's a solid film with a few problems here and there, but I probably wouldn't recommend it to people who weren't fans of the series.

Unlike most shows, the standalone episodes of the X Files are usually better than the sprawling contradictory story arc ones. This is an extended version of one of those story arc episodes. As such it raises more questions than it answers, goes against what was previously known and ultimately ends without the viewer being any closer to the truth. It should have been a conclusion to the X Files rather than letting the show hobble along for a few more seasons. But as a fan I still quite like it.

Enjoyable, if somewhat overheated and self-important, sci-fi conspiracy yarn is a servicable enough time-killer even if (like me) you've never seen the TV series. Over reliance on ponderous expository information (combined with the unmistakeable look and feel of an extended TV show episode) outweighed by some genuinely creepy gotcha! moments, and a distinguished supporting cast (though both Mulder and Scully are irretrievably dull and glum characters).

After watching this movie I got the same feeling I got after watching most of the X Files episodes: what really changed? Special agent Mulder and Scully are portrayed as heroes, but all they accomplished at the end of the movie was to piss off the aliens by making them leave (by accident). I liked the series so I like the movie.

If you're a fan of the TV show then this is certainly a must see. Yes it's like a two hour long episode with a higher budget but it's a good two hour long episode. However, if you haven't followed the TV show then you will be completely lost. In fact if you're a fan but haven't watched seasons 1-4 then you'll probably still be lost. Actually a really well-made sci-fi thriller that "X Files" fans should thoroughly enjoy even if it doesn't stand up to some of the series' best episodes. The plot is interesting and intriguing, the effects superb. My only gripe is its extra terrestrial plot seems to borrow a lot from the concept of the creature in the "Alien" films.

Maligned by critics when first released for being just an ordinary show episode stretched to 90 minutes. Whenever someone makes that criticism, they're completely missing what made The X Files endure in the first place- the relationship between Mulder & Scully. Good or bad plot, 50 or 90 minutes, aliens or crazed cults- all that is irrelevent compared to the on screen chemistry between David Duchovny & Gillian Anderson, & their excellent supporting cast (including Mitch Pileggi as AD Skinner).

Ah, yes, the jumping of the shark. The series still made sense until this movie came out and contradicted and crapped all over the previously established Order of Things. The film release was bookended by a two-parter, the first part of which was stellar, the second part of which was a nightmarishly over-simplistic, over-budgeted, ET-like joke. And it got no better. As a stand-alone film, this isn't terrible, so I can't give it a terrible score, but seriously, this was infuriating.
