Letty moves to East Texas from the East and it seems that the wind always blows and the sand gets everywhere. While living with relatives, she finds that she is not welcomed by the wife. With no where to go, she marries a man who disgusts her. Her new home is a small shack with the wind and the sand constant companions. When it is necessary for most of the men to go out into the sand storm, one stays back to have his way with Letty and that costs both of them. (imdb)

For the time, it's fantastic (Top-10 Silents list material). By today's standards it's also very good; the old-fashioned-mannered comedic sidekick Sourdough is just about all betraying the age of the film. Gish is intense, especially during the mounting tension in the effective finale, but what makes the film extraordinary are Sjöström's brilliant directorial choices. 'Take Shelter' and this could be an interesting double bill.

In which the horrors of living in a godforsaken backwater place with dumbass hicks is weighed against the horrors of a creepy married guy trying to rape you. This is not lighthearted fare, and the climax is as intense as any modern movie I've seen. The craftsmanship on display is impressive, not just for 1928 but for any era. Most of the really good stuff comes in the third act, but I wouldn't say that the buildup is boring or anything.

A very well shot film with some extremely fantastic moments, both suspenseful, and romantic. Although the romance and the ending in particular seem rather contrived, it is still a worthwhile experience to see a never ending storm haunt an innocent young Virginia girl.

Great drama and fantastic suspenseful atmosphere. The story overall feels a little stretched out though. It's not slow, if anything the pacing is perfect, it's just a lot of it doesn't seem that necessary in hindsight. Still very enjoyable.

A poetic study of isolation with the bleakness of Woman in the Dunes. The music was kind of both ridiculous and inspired.

This is Sjöström's first North American film, and it's an intriguing blend of styles ... very much an American western, but with odd expressionistic lighting and an exaggerated, psychological style. A strange, beguiling film.

A somewhat unusual, beautiful silent film with a very good performance from Gish. The ending seems a bit wrong, but the atmosphere and mood of the piece is outstanding and there's not any bloat at all. The score I heard with this was a discordant, odd soundtrack (in a good way) that amplified the mood quite a bit.

Some of the most experienced and assured hands in silent melodrama delivering exactly what they know how to do best. Sjöström's evocative use of weather and strong performances from Gish and Hanson prove the most memorable elements. The script delivers them some great moments to work with, even if it remains true to form for the era in its rushed developments and its need to turn a rather bleak novel in a more Hollywood-friendly direction.

[COVID approved; they wear masks] I think I could watch an entire movie of nothing but Lillian Gish's facial expressions. Here, this woman of the dunes has to face her growing uncomfort with her new life out west and the constantly-blowing wind. Some decent special effects for the time. The plot is a little weak and the ending a little fast to turn around; it still manages to do a lot with what it has (including some strong character actors).

Certainly ahead of its time in many respects, but it ultimately relents to conventional story-telling. Gish is utterly spell-binding in her acting, dwarfing many modern performances in sheer raw poignancy.

Há 140 anos nascia Victor Sjöström. A beleza. DVDRip no MakingOff.

Beautifully shot film that contains a number of remarkable sequences, but I didn't see the greatness that others see in it. The craftsmanship is impeccable, especially for 1928, and Gish is excellent in the lead role, playing a damsel in distress surrounded by predatory men with acute sensitivity. The wind metaphor is cliched though and the story is relatively uninteresting. Perhaps I missed something, so this rating is tentative.

Blatantly overblown (sorry) melodrama is well-crafted, and the last 20 minutes before the era-mandated 'happy' ending are admittedly stunning, but the plotting (and pacing) up until then is a mess, and it's metaphor of the harsh weather is a little too on the nose. As always, Gish's expressive, haunting face is perfect for these melodramas, and Cumming is very good in support as a woman who sees her own cuckolding from a mile away.

The presence of wind and sand is impressively captured by the camera, pairing well with the emotions of Letty. Gish's role is also noteworthy.

Sjöström and Gish (and Larson, who gets the melodrama just right) at the height of their powers; not entirely unlike "Woman in the Dunes", the neverending presence of a harsh nature grinds away at both the lead and the audience, leading to a spectacular finale. Yes, the ending feels a bit tacked on, but it still works - "I see nothing out there but sand."

An atmospheric portrait of a sheltered woman clashing with new surroundings yields impressive characterizations, set lyrically against the climate motif of the title, presaging Kurosawa, Spielberg and Malick in its use of nature as storyteller.

a flash or two a greatness, but with all the melodrama and and over the top silent expressions it's hard for sjostrom to come close to the phantom carriage. i'll give that ending my praise, it was pretty damned good.

Unless it's a disgustingly racist piece, it seems impossible for me to not enjoy a feature with Lillian Gish. The capable direction of Sjöström certainly doesn't hurt.

The films superb atmosphere is what really sets it apart. Even on a terribly weathered print the visuals are stunning and Gish's performance really exudes bleakness and desperation. The climax is truly great and while the ending seems a bit out of sync with everything that happens before it, it doesn't detract from how enjoyable the film is.
