The White Crow

Sluggish telling of what should be a fascinating story is hampered by some bizarre structural decisions, intercutting Nureyev's childhood with the gradually oppressive forces in Moscow that threaten to engulf him - the jumping around causes confusion and means the tension is dissipated when we should be acutely aware of the screws turning. Still the finale is suitably tense and Ivenko does a great job embodying Nureyev as a man and dancer; it's just a shame the movie shoots itself in the foot.

Ralph Fiennes proves a good director, but with a hard to like protagonist, and thin and non-engaging plot, it was really slow for me. The airport scene was really good though and somewhat salvaged the film.

A pretty well made biopic, despite lacking more substantive conflict than the film thinks occurred, though it does lead up to a wonderfully elongated tense climax that makes you hope for the best for this man, not because of his character, but because of what he represents politically. Great moves, too.

Well made, but likely only got made so they could at least touch on his gaydom--the prevalence of which in entertainment has gotten out of hand. But like the news media, they do it even though it costs them in the end. If they want to do it right (without the blatant causism), study "Bohemian Rhapsody".
