Summer people in Maine: things are changing. Whales no longer pass close to the shore as they did during the youth of two elderly widowed sisters who have a seaside home where they've summered for 50 years. Libby is blind, contrary, and seemingly getting ready to die. Sarah is attentive to her sister, worried about continuing to care for her, and half interested in an old Russian aristocrat who fishes from their shore... (imdb)

Superb. Gish is ineffably moving as the gentle caretaker who looks after her blind sister, and Davis is magnificent as the embittered, blind Libby, forever passing judgment and clearly thriving on her querulousness.

A fitting tribute to two great actresses in the December of their respective careers. (Poetically, it really SHOULD have been Davis's final film, but somehow that "Wicked Stepmother" abortion happened.) Admittedly, it's beautifully done, though the thin material holds ones interest but barely. Thankfully, Ann Sothern livens things up a bit. They say she brought her own poker chips and played cards with the crew during breaks, and I believe it--still a pistol at 78!

A very gentile film about caring and loving and growing old. The two sisters need each other to exist and their relationship developed over the years. Vincent Price plays a good outsider/beggar. Quite slow and laid-back plot without much going on. I was far more intrigued at the careers of the two aging actresses as well as their behind-the-scenes bickering. Fav scene: gossiping with their neighbor.

No whales. Can't believe nobody died. Everyone was so old I was expecting somebody to drop dead in the middle of a conversation. Maybe me?

Vincent Price's most boring film by a country mile
