On the spectrum of movies that didn't connect with me, this sits somewhere between The Master and American Beauty. I do like movies about white guys and their problems, but evidently it has to be the right white guys and the right problems. You know, like Without a Paddle!

Hopelessly mis-advertised as a light hearted comedy when it was released, this movie did not do as well as it deserved to. A funny and intelligent dark comedy. Cage is excellent.

Very underrated. This is a great dark comedy. When you see this Spritz's life you either have to laugh or cry, and through good editing, acting, and directing I laughed every time. Especially when he uses his gloves to slap someone in the face.

Creating awkward and horribly uncomfortable situations doesn't automatically translate to good drama. This is really just a shallow and weak film that had me rolling my eyes. This felt lazy, almost. "Let's make everything in the world go wrong for this guy, in extreme situations. Then let's fill it in with hackneyed dialogue and an artsy lens washout or whatever that crap is." Complete crap.

The story is there, the acting is there, but everything else feels uninspired and lacks polish. I feel that if another director had done this instead it could have been a much more interesting affair. Also, the music starts off working really well, giving a really good sense of uneasy anxiety that Nic Cage has, but just looses its oomph really quickly.

The film contains some great scenes, and is an cool portrait of Chicago, yet it often brings a feeling that it really doesn't understand what direction it wants to push its plot and character arcs. It gets more than a little lost in itself.

With palpably chilly and sumptuous cinematography by Phedon Papamichael of a snow-drenched Chicago that matches the oftentimes bleak mood of David, this superbly mixes darkness with effortless comedy without ever becoming overly depressing or silly. Only in the subplot involving Michael and would-be molester Don does the picture stumble; when forced to face the subject matter head-on, it recoils and wimps out, making this whole section an ill fit with the rest of the themes and stories.

I changed its score for the third time. It's getting higher everytime i watch. It has a great humour, strong story and character developments. Cage shines in his role and Sir Michael Caine gives another delicious performance (one of his best performances). Gore Verbinski is such a gem, he made worth-watching movies vary from horror to fantastic/adventure. I believe he did a well job in drama/comedy too, eventhough it is one of the most underrated movies of the last 5 years..

An incredibly misunderstood gem; marketed as a comedy, it's really a coming-of-age dramedy about real (depressing) issues: lost love, child-rearing and professions, backed up with great shots and allegories. Cage makes everything he's in believable, and his apathetic frustration is both real and compelling.

Gore Verbinski's best. I wonder what it would be like if he put down the pirates and took up more films like this one. Nevertheless, this is great largely do to Cage's breathtaking performance. If films like this and "lord of war" didn't flop we'd see a lot more of them, and a lot less of "Ghost Rider."

One word - painful. I can't watch a movie only part way through, but after this waste of time, I'm going to have to reconsider my position. Cage is just the same actor in every movie it seems, and this had so much unnecessary swearing (and I'm known to be quite the swearer). This is nowhere close to "American Pie" or "About Schmidt", as it was hailed. Save yourself, watch "Face Off" or something.

Identity crisis much? This movie is fun and awkward, reminded me a bit on Larry David. The ever-melanholic eyes of Cage work remarkably well in this film. But I liked it despite that I see there's a lot of criticism towards it, I enjoyed it actually. I like that it's not easy and likeable, that it needs to crawl under your skin a bit. Of course it has some really bad moments where you think - OK, this IS too much.

I went into "The Weather Man" expecting a bad, over the top Nicholas Cage performance and I got a glum, sincere, convincing performance from a very interesting movie. "The Weather Man" has great cinematography, an uncomfortably real plot, and a darkly comedic screenplay. I feel like the film is one step away from being great, though I don't know what that missing piece is. It interested me to the end and split the room of viewers in half. We didn't know if we liked it but it got us talking.

I think the script was intended to be a comedy, but Verbinski seems to think it isn't. So you end up with a very serious, morose drama with tonally bizarre moments of laugh-out-loud comedy. It doesn't really work, though it's not really bad, just kinda awkward.

The Weather Man is a bleak, depressing movie about a man whose personal life is in turmoil, but whose professional life is soaring. He's a man worthy of redemption, and while he might not necessarily get it, the lesson will be given strongly to the audience. By the end of watching it, assuming you can make it to the anticlimactic finish, you will have learned more than anyone in the film. That's fine, but it's a tough watch to sit through, and it's really tough to recommend as a result.

Cage is fantastic as always, but it's like Gore Verbinski is trying waaaaay too hard to be the Coen brothers. Although, I'll give him credit for being ingenious enough to cast Michael Caine as Nic Cage's father. The scenes they share are some of the best parts of the movie.

A great portrayal of a modern purposeless American that lacks substance in his life. He knows he is in crisis but he doesn't really know why. What makes it great is that he doesn't understand that about himself and you know that he never will; he will never get an epiphany. He isn't shown to be an idiot or vapid, he just ended up being a useless crappy guy. It was really funny and it could have been great but it flirted a little bit too much with convention. But maybe that was by design.

Calling this "one of Nick Cage's best in recent memory" isn't all that much of a compliment. It is also good compared to the home videos I made when I was 10. Same comparison. Still, the obvious symbolism and the completely depressing tone is well done, at times.

Went into this with low expectations, but was surprised to find a poignant little character study about a guy struggling to find some sort of balance in a world that makes no sense to him. In other words, a coming-of-age story. Subdued cinematography and melancholy music help set the mood, and although it's not really a comedy, there are a few amusing moments.

The story kept my interest despite how slow and mundane it is.This is due to the great script and performances of all involved, particularly Nicholas Cage who delivers a stand out performance as David Spritz. This film's focus is squarely on the day to day stuff happening to this man and how he relates to it.While this did not offer any broad statement on life it is a great character driven movie that I highly enjoyed watching.

There's just something about this movie I love. I've watched it countless times now and I loved it every time. The type of movie that you'll either loathe for being odd and pointless, or adore for being quirky and different. Personally, I liked it a lot, though the incessant product placements became a bit grating. I suppose one must pay the bills somehow when making an independent movie with big studio talent, however. Cage is very good in these schlep-type roles, and Caine is a welcome addition to any cast. Verbinski needs to cut loose from Pirates-style action films-- pared down, he's quite competent.
