The Watermelon Woman

It may not be the best movie, but it’s definitely fun, with a certain charm to it. And of course extremely lesbian, which is magnificent

As someone who volunteers in archives, I see daily the marginalisation of Black and Queer people. We have no Black history collection despite being in an area vital to Black immigration history. No Queer archive despite living in the same building as Queer groups have done for decades. This film highlights problems that still need to be remedied, and quickly. Just as when the film was being made, the people who have these important stories are dying off and with them unrecorded history.

Interestingly structured with echoes of F for Fake, but the acting is pretty mediocre and a lot of it feels quite disjointed. It comes together pretty well, though, and is interesting.

Extremely lo-fi but very funny and smart with an intriguing, thoughtful central concept and also lots of gay shit!!!

Very innovative and does so much in such efficient ways, very clearly drawn relationships between characters. Cheryl Dunye treats the film's queer and racial themes with compassion, nuance and loads of insight.

This has lots of goofs and flimsy lines of dialogue, and really wears its racial and queer themes on its sleeve the whole time, as if there's almost nothing else in Cheryl's life. Still, it's just a good movie - down to earth, cleverly devised and bold in its style of storytelling, with flavourful characters.

Give me a movie of just them chilling in the video store over some convoluted thing

A fake documentary, shot in a rough-and-ready manner, that will interest only some of those who share the sexual preferences of its maker.
