I can see why this was maligned by reviewers, as the low brand of humor it is going for is, per definition, not in good taste. Nevermind that, though, for whenever the material is lacking in sophistication - or in general - the delivery always ranges from decent to hilarious. So if you find some of these guys funny (Hill is my favorite, but Ayoade was good, too), or just require easily consumable entertainment, I say: fuck the critics.

Richard Ayoade is always fun, and Jonah Hill was amusing to an extent. Generally though, despite me being a fan of crude humour, this just wasn't funny enough, or interesting enough. It just felt a bit underdeveloped, or incomplete. I did laugh a couple of times, but I'd struggle to recommend this.

Apart from perhaps Ayoade (if you haven't come across him previously) there is nothing new here. Stiller and Vaughn are just going over the the same old tricks. But this is perfectly enjoyable if your happy to listen to 90 odd minutes of cock jokes... which it turns out I was!

Richard Ayoade is completely wasted on this film. There are a handful of, I have to begrudgingly admit, were hilarious but the majority of the film is just a crude and foul-mouthed garbage for the sake of crude and foul-mouthed garbage. Highly disappointing.

Maybe it was the infectious, near-constant laughter of the audience in my screening. Maybe it was my inexplicable love of Ben Stiller, or my far more explicable love of Richard Ayoade. Maybe it was a result of reviews setting my expectations absurdly low. But this rates as one of the most pleasant surprises of the summer for me: I really, really enjoyed this movie. It's silly and dumb, but it was so much fun.

Scattered and unfocused comedy seems to aspire to GHOSTBUSTERS with its mix of silly hijinks with some (surprisingly) vivid violence and mayhem – it never quite makes it, but it’s still fun to watch, especially proportionate to your affection for Stiller, Vaughn and Hill’s timeworn patter and personas, and your happiness to indulge the multiple plot digressions (especially the handbrake stop to watch Ermey do his thing). No world beater, but pretty consistent on the chuckle-meter.

One of those movies where it's made abundantly clear that the cast had much more fun making it than anyone will watching it. There are other jokes besides dick jokes guys, flex a fucking brain cell or two. Also, it's obvious when they're improvising, and everyone but Ayoade is really not very good at it.

Stiller, Vaughn, and Hill all play their standard characters that were so prevalent during the mid 00's. So there are a few laughs to be had but they feel stale. Richard Ayoade is the weird energy that is welcomed. It is hard not compare this to the previous year's Attack the Block, which is far superior.

The thing with The Watch is there is a great concept here, and with this talent attached to it, it could be really interesting. For what we got though, it's a mixed bag. Truthfully the talented leads do solid with what they're given, but the writing isn't up to snuff. A lot of it derives from pointless and stupidly raunchy jokes that look like they're pulled from a SNL skit. I like the idea and the talent here, and they're what ultimately make this a fine one time watch.

Disappointing comedy for fans of all involved in the production. With Seth Rogan and Evan Goldberg writting, Arkiva Schaffer directing, and staring the classic pairing of Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn in addition to Jonah Hill and Richard Ayoade it's a wonder why the film failed to be more than it did with so many different comedic influences.

Watching this thing, I kept expecting Seth Rogen to show up, not knowing that he co-wrote it. Apparently the tone is unmistakable. Is Vince Vaughn exhibiting detailed knowledge of the taste of cum supposed to be humor hinging on irony or something wildly unexpected? 'Cuz it sure seemed perfectly natural to me...

This movie had its moments. The Normal Guys Try To Do Good And Get Way In Over Their Heads premise was as bog standard as they come, but in a movie like this it's really only the setting for jokes anyway, and when they were on they were on. The problem was they were on only barely more than they were off. I will never in my life get tired of Richard Ayoade, though, and this movie underused him to a criminal degree. I get that he's an unknown to the target audience, but come on. He's a gem.

Another mediocre mainstream Stiller/Vaughn release that's mostly lazy gags mixed into a crowd-pleasing soundtrack. Hill is the stand-out in the group, Ayoade does his 'thing' as the weakest member. The story and characters do grow on you, and there are laughs in places (particularly when the cast appear to be improvising their banter), but the new 'burbs this aint.

The very annoying problem is that the story doesn't let the humor emerge (enough) from these actors' talents or their understanding of their characters. I don't mind that this is really a stupid alien movie or that it goes waaaaay overboard with the raunchy humor. What I mind is that the characters become slaves to the stupid alien plot, and rather than comedy emerging from the sequence of events, the only thing that emerges from any given event is the next boring event.

'Superbad' meeting 'Men in Black' could have been entertaining, especially with the comedic talent at work here---there really is no excuse for such a misfire as 'The Watch' which meanders between forced R-rated raunch and PG-13 humor. The script never finds its footing, the actors never certain of what they're doing, and the jokes never hitting their target. The action beats largely trump the laughs, and that is the worst compliment this alleged comedy could receive.

In light of all the recent action movies hamstrung by a PG-13 rating, here's a comedy/sci-fi movie that really could have used those restraints. Maybe then it would have some running time devoted to comedy or the alien invasion, instead of cramming profanities everywhere and having everything be about sex. Literally everything - the only way to kill the aliens is to shoot their dicks off.

In a closing scene, a mall explodes sending plaques of the main character, alien heads and... well boxes of condoms flying. This is the essence of the movie. Actiony, funny and scifiy. At times the characters were one-dimensional, and some twists were the most stupid and annoying things I've ever seen. But like a flesh eating bacteria, it grows on you whether you like it or not.

An unexpected Sci-fi/Comedy written by Seth Rogen, Even Goldberg and Jared Stern. I had forgotten that this movie involved aliens attacking the small Ohio town that Ben Stiller's character is obsessed with. He bands together with other misfits and creates a neighborhood watch after his night guardsman for Costco is brutally ripped apart. I thought the jokes were pretty good, there was a lot of good comedic timing and I just love the sci-fi twist to the film. I just wasn't expecting any of that.
