A gang of racketeers frames down-on-his-luck John Elman for murder. After a trial finds him guilty, evidence is brought forth proving his innocence, but it is too late and he is executed anyway. A doctor sees an opportunity to use an experimental procedure to restore him to life but is that entirely possible? Desirable? (imdb)

One of the better Courtroom Drama-Gangster-Zombie-Revenge-Sci-Fi movies you're likely to see. Or one of the worst. I don't care.

Karloff plays a superficially similar character to the Frankenstein Monster, but gets to play human as well & unsurprisingly excels at making his character compellingly sympathetic. Story-wise I wish I had not read the synopsis as not knowing the hybrid plot would make for a hell of an unpredictable film. But since I did, its age makes it retroactively unsurprising w/ tropes. (Did it inspire DC's Spectre?) Still, unlike other old films, the pacing is fast & it goes through story like a shark.

I found it more sad than scary, actually; still, gangsters and zombies make for an....interesting mix.

Less a straight horror movie and more a crime/horror hybrid, turning many cliches of the genre on their ear. The resurrected man is believably damaged, yet hasn't become anything like a monster; the scientist who brought him back, far from playing God, wants to prove the existence of the hereafter; the "revenge" is nothing of the sort, being karmic punishment of the truest kind. Recommended for anyone who likes thoughtful movies with action.

Better than I expected it to be, for a 1936 horror flick. It actually has a decent, real-world setup, only a brief "weird sciency" bit, and then a mostly-satisfying third act. Plus the always reliable acting of Karloff.

Yeah, this was kind of lame. I hate saying the words dated but this one definitely feels the force of time cuz Curtiz didn't even really do the atmosphere in a compelling way. It's literally just Karloff doing his Frankenstein but less frightening and engaging. It's just a mess of genre juggling and doesn't really pull any of them off.

Boris Karloff does Frankenstein.... without the make-up! Karloff is framed for murder and sentenced to the electric chair. A doctor makes Karloff come back to life.... in some kind of dazed state. But where the story hits is how Karloff behaving as demented aging man in an old folks home gets the supernatural power of seeing the guilt of those that framed him. And revenge is on! By putting them on a massive guilt-trip when they look into his sorry eyes. It's surprisingly heartfelt!

Soaked in atmosphere, but otherwise rather naive. Karloff seems to have simply dialed into to his Monster persona without much effort.

The film has a decent premise and Karloff is fine (though I wouldn't exactly say top form), but there's nothing else really notable. For a horror film there's very little that's creepy or scary.
