While the premise might sound banal and/or contrived, the concept of identity changing memory loss (working so well in 'Memento') is actually potentially deep and a solid platform for the love triangle between a cute McAdams, her former fiancé, and her current husband. Performances are convincing enough but fail to produce that extra emotional oomph which might have sold the so-so script. The parent angle is especially lazily handled. In its favor, neither they nor the ex are overly villainized.

An interesting arc of forgiveness gives this film nuance beyond your typical romantic drama, elements of which are still very present, and solid performances give it weight.

I realize this movie is called "The Vow", but is it necessary to hear it at three separate points? That's the least of my issues with this flick, but it's emblematic of what's wrong with it. It's so in love with itself that it plays every overly sappy moment with no self awareness. The plot devices are worse than a Lifetime movie and it's shameless about it. People act stupid and get stupider results. At least the stars keep it interesting, but even the Toronto for Chicago didn't convince me.

The subject matter is well selected, and a great movie could have been made with it. Unfortunately, it is treated like a sappy romance, rather than really exploring the themes.

I could tell I was not the audience for this movie. That being said I wasn't particularly offended and it proceeded smoothly. The whole thing was played really straight and nothing particularly unexpected happened. Tatum as a hipster was... weird. Eh.

Terrible. I not only wanted to leave the cinema, I wanted to leap over the back of my seat and run the hell out. I hate when they force us to sit through two characters' horribly written, awkward, clichéd wedding vows. This film makes you sit through them three times, seemingly for the sole reason that they're referenced in the film's title. It manages to barely salvage a few scraps by the end but it's not nearly enough to save this trainwreck.

What an odd chick-flick this is... the guy acts more like a chick than the chick does (and Channing Tatum is so pretty it's easy to overlook the fact that he CAN act). Has a good movie EVER been made that hinges on amnesia? (And, no, "Memento" was most definitely not a good movie.) Best line: "What about my law degree??"

Irregular and forgettable piece who, on the other side, balances effectively the usual cheesy drama and some bits of reality.

Channing Tatum has no charisma at all, and aside from the dialogue, I never once believed he gave a fuck about the girl. Neither did I though, she was kind of annoying. Everyone in the movie was. It's such a nothing movie. It's a movie, and I watched it, and there is nothing to really write about because nothing really happens, and there is nothing to take away from it. I didn't particularly enjoy the experience while I was watching it, but it's not really bad. It's just nothing.

Biased review bc of very relatable memory loss, heartbreak, relationship issues/attachment styles, family issues, etc. Without all that it’s probably closer to 70/100. Maybe would’ve done better with the general audience if they introduced it from the start as a true story so people can sympathize as they’re watching?

The first part had me almost walking out. Hyper-sappy. Thought I was trapped in a chick-a-thon-fest. But it really got very good as it went along. The "epi-note" at the end made it even more worthwhile.

the premise was very interesting but the film ultimately didn't live up to it and ended up being a bit tedious. the film didn't know what it wanted to be and as a result straddled between a sappy romance and a "real" drama. mcadams's real emotions and her confused navigation through her life just clashed completely with tatum's unrealistic romanticism. the cinematography had some beautiful moments, but perpetuated that glowing, romantic style that was not always followed in the film.

Inspired by true events, a couple meets, falls in love, gets married, then an accident reset her memory to 5 years prior. It portrays what must have been an extremely difficult situation. Extra points for the beautiful Rachel McAdams. Channing Tatum was OK. The story is almost too sweet at times, but it has a few engaging and entertaining moments. The plot and script are not particularly exciting, but this is a good movie to watch with your girlfriend.

Is it possible that a romance flick with Mumbles Tatum and Rachel McAdams (who I've never really liked) was NOT a sack of dogshit-stained carpet? Believe it! I loved the dynamic between the two, this North-side-of-Chicago, hipster-esque romance. I'll pull the reigns back a bit though, because there was some textbook wonk in there (the car accident and her flying through the window was TERRIBLY done, it looked silly), but nothing felt tacked on and I was surprisingly pleased with the experience.

Cute, but some parts feel like an 8-year-old wrote it and directed it. The performances hold this one together, especially, of course, the two leads, and especially Rachel McAdams being all cute and shit.

This isn't terrible but it's not really memorable, and I usually remember a lot of movies I watch, especially love stories. McAdams is beautiful and Tatum isn't really a bad actor. The movie is just kind of forgettable, and it lacks the emotional flair so many other romance films have. I'm sure it will please a lot of people but I didn't love it.

This romantic drama - based on an incredible true story - is too conventional and manipulative to really be entertaining. It is watchable based solely on the talent and likability of Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams. The talents of Jessica Lange and Sam Neill are wasted on shallow characters that are really just plot devices to move the story in new directions.

I have probably never sat through a film this predictable. And who is the costume responsable that decided he should wear that HAT in the opening scene. I want to hug you for ruining the entire scene with something so simple as that! I couldn't watch anything else! Exquisite.

The Vow is about romantic love--an inspiring, sacrificial, beautiful sort of romantic love, to be sure. But it loses sight of its own title and, in so doing, fails to talk about another side of love: the hard side of love, the love we choose to cling to even when neither we nor our partner is very lovable at all. This film was such a big hit that apparently it doesn't matter that it was bland to the core. I didn't buy anything here. It wasn't funny; it wasn't emotionally gripping; it wasn't believable---even if it was inspired by true events. The characters have zero dimension.

Adams unfortunately doesn't shine the way we are used to see her, but does okay (of course). Tatum is simply not the right actor for such an emotional role. On the bottom line, The Vow wastes the great potential of the story - it could have been much much more. The best thing about it was Jessica Lange using the little focus she gets to deliver the top scene of this film.

McAdams is delightful as usual, but poor Channing Tatum couldn't act even if it meant his life. Other than that, this is just another moderately adequate and forgettable romantic drama.

Usually I hate when amnesia is used in tv or movies because it is such an easy plot point to use. Luckily this is based off of a true story so that helps the situation. This movie was pretty frustrating because the whole time everyone but Channing Tatum is using poor Rachel McAdams to their own desires. All the while knowing that they are taking advantage of someone with brain damage. It was just infuriating. I felt more mad than inspired by the romanticism in the film. Was that the goal? hmm.

The Vow is dull, clichéd, boring, and poorly written. The screenplay is lifeless, the actors are dull, the characters are one-dimensional, and there is nothing in the film worth your time. Actually, there's a cute cat that's there for a couple of scenes. He looked like he could use some love. Maybe watch The Vow for the cat. Sadly, it was probably the most convincing acting in the movie. At least I thought that the cat was worth looking at. Cute, cute kitty cat.
