The Virginian

A mere seven months and six features after The Squaw Man, DeMille shows a command of style and narrative coherence that were sorely lacking in that first film. What mostly stands out is the sophisticated composition, which is first-rate for 1914; there are even things like group closeups, effective uses of background action, a decent mirror shot, etc. Otherwise, it's a fairly straightforward adaption of the most important scenes from the novel.
