The Virgin Queen

During filming, Bette Davis's son asked his father, "Why is Mummy yelling at that man instead of you?" Indeed, there are several scenes where she sounds like Margaret Hamilton's Wicked Witch of the West. Not a particularly good movie--the script is especially weak--but she's effective. There's something marvelously old-fashioned about Richard Todd...he could have been a real superstar had he been born 20 years earlier.

It starts off with a great fight scene and follows it up with some great verbal sparring. The acting is solid and the pace fast. A very enjoyable historic drama.

Fairly pleasing period piece with great colours, costumes, and a tour de force performance from the ever brilliant Bette Davis. The main story with Raleigh, his ships, and secret wife, was a tad ho-hum and forgettable. The opening act, and Todd's scenes with Davis were the standout material of the film.

Surprisingly enjoyable melodrama. Lavish costumes, dodgy sets and witty banter, topped off by queeni's (davis) transition from eccentric to unhinged. good times.

Whilst I am not keen on this style/era of film making and would prefer this to be in black and White. Bette Davis is always worth watching and I was drawn into the story by the end.
