The Very Eye of Night

Trying to be creative with dance and surroundings, but the end result wasn't very exciting.

Tranquil and calming but incidental. I appreciate Deren's interest in bringing musical qualities and movement into film but like most of what I've seen of her work, it ends up feeling like an incomplete little experiment that has creativity but doesn't really lead to anything super interesting. Kinda reminded me of Lotte Reiniger's silhouette animation.

Creative, sure, but not always engaging.

This film did not have me as much as Deren's other works (probably akin to Fantasia for Disney in its time). But hey, an experiment that misfires is still an experiment, thank God.

Author intent: Great. The Film: Not so great. Really, I appreciate what's going on here, but it's just not that entertaining. So keep that in mind. Technically I'm recommending it, though.
