The Truffle Hunters

Beautifully shot but not enough going on for me.

Beautifully filmed and a cast of interesting characters but it lacked narrative and/ or an ultimate purpose-so became a bit directionless.

Brilliant, delightful, charming on every step. One almost can smell the scent of Italian autumn and truffles. First scene showing dog in a car surprises amazingly. Every frame could be framed as a painting.

This is a very sweet movie at times, but it feels like a collage rather than an examination. Everytime something truly interesting happens, it pivots rather than deepens. "Someone's poisoning our dogs!" WHAT, LET ME KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT THAT?! "No, sorry, we have to focus on this guy's wife being mad that he's too good at his job."

Strikingly photographed, if meandering portrait of the titular hunters is enjoyable enough for the particular quirks these old guys bring to their unique hobby, but the film strikes an uneasy compromise between naturalistic and staged - the lack of a narrative, or ultimately point, to the 80 minute running time might have been easier to forgive if the film wasn't so clearly staged and manufactured. Diverting enough, but not enough substance here for a full meal.
