It's entirely pantomime and dog barks so you'd think this would be boring. Not at all. It's fantastic. and it's fantastic because it feeds off of its medium and does things live-action simply cannot. Just look at how demented the humans are in this movie. Everything is twisted and bones and spines curve unnaturally and mafia dons look like walking dominoes. Great animation. Oh, and Bruno the dog's surreal dreams are hilarious. He might be the best character, actually..

There are numerous animated movies that simply do not need to be animated in that they don't make the most of the medium. This is the epitome of a film that THRIVES on its animation. The subtle (or not so subtle) exaggerations that can't be done in live-action: brilliant "acting" from human and non-human "actors", the unique visual composition of waiters, mechanics and mafia dons that produces ocean deep characters with zero dialogue. This is how animation should be done.

Wow, this is great. Is Chomet going to be the European Miyazaki? Not only is the animation similar, it's also similar to Miyazaki's work in how imaginatively odd it is, how nothing's obvious, how complex it is, and of course, the old ladies. Bruno is the most endearing, touching, poetic, overall best animated dog I've ever seen in my life, and the music is excellent too. I was disappointed that the ending slumped into tired cliches, but I guess you can't have everything, can you?

If only more films were this artistic and daring. Almost unbearable pathos is created in fractions of a second, with seemingly no effort. The same goes for joy.

I feel like there's something being communicated here that didn't come across for me. The animation is good, if sometimes confusing in its stylistic choices. There are some nicely emotional moments, as in the slow scene post-training towards the beginning. But there are so many "why"s. Why the old-timey racism at the beginning? Why the frogsicles? Why the triplets themselves? I feel like there's a deep thematic link that I'm missing, and I'm not sure if that's my fault or the movie's.

Pretty neat, drawing inspiration from Tati in its oblong visual schemes and pantomime comedy (and duly noted by an M. Hulot's Holiday poster hanging in the triplets' apartment).

Delightfully bizarre. The fact that it tells a coherent story without dialog or intertitles, and instead relies solely on the imagery is astounding. There should be more stuff like this.

A gnomish grandma and a fat dog engage on a mission to save a bike-riding young man from the mob, picking up the help of old dancing/singing/music-making/frog-loving old ladies along the way. If you're not interested already, chances are you are a boring, sad person. The highlights here are the animation and the stunning art direction, every scene is detailed and beautiful, and, most importantly, the film looks like no other.

Brilliant animation, I can't remember another cartoon where the caricaturisation was done to such over-the-top extremes. And yet, some of the character animation, for example the dog, captured more reality than drawings have a right to. It's fantastic. I also loved the film being packed with French traditions and culture and having loads of tiny details in the background rounding out its authenticity. The finale felt a little rushed, but bonus points for the totally wacky and unpredictable plot.

I enjoy foreign films, but the Triplets of Belleville is in my opinion the textbook example of why people often dislike foreign films. It is jejune, contrived, and tedious at its best and at worst it is a repulsive and malignant stain on the current state imported cinema. Not having dialogue and using animation is not "original" and the few "original" bits are too post-modern. Its widespread praise is more the result of naiveté and pretentiousness than any artistic achievement.

A beautiful story of a grandmother who travels across the world to find her grandson who was kidnapped by the French mob. Everything about this movie is beautifully disfigured and I loved it. I felt bad for the dog's fat belly in the beginning but towards the end I felt it was more muscle than fat. The grandson seemed so bleak but you could tell there was so much love between the grandmother and him that I never quite fell into the trap. The triplets were eccentric so I wanted their ending too.

Most definitely its own thing, and consequently on its own peculiar wavelength; it's as if Wallace & Gromit were taken over by Adam Elliot. Certainly memorable, but not sure if the queasily ugly, and archly stylised, animation is either a necessary or worthy fit for this hodge-podge story; it’s so heightened and removed from any recognisable reality that it is difficult to become invested in the drama because the style is so ostentatious. Ends on a most frustrating, and annoying shaggy dog note.

Famous animation, which was nominee of Oscar and lost to Finding Nemo. Animation is mostly meant for adults as it presents themes what belong to adults world, including topless dancing. Its also not colored as some lollipop and basically mocking everything what adults too. Great stuff.

A lot of the quirkiness worked for me. I appreciate the attention to detail and ability to move a story with no dialogue. The music is great. The grandmother and the dog are good characters. The grandson seems labotomized but is strangely mesmerizing. However, the animation, which so many found "beautiful" is simply ... ugly. Yes, I watched the whole film with an open mind and I couldn't get over the visual ugliness. Also, the final 20 minutes is a little too randomwacky to satisfy.

Great animation, if not senselessly over-stylized. The deus ex machina ending is just one of many things that make me cringe. Other than the quirky animation, which loses appeal very quickly, there isn't much anything I can say positively about this movie. If it weren't for that honestly I think I'd give it a 0.

The type of grotesque type of animation with a very different type of hero and funny parts that make you chuckle. This would make cyclist laugh their heads of, most definitely, if they are true cyclists, because the entire focus of the young man who should be saved was on cycling. His loving grandmother was the most supporting and loving person I've seen--even with her annoying whistle :). A strange scene of the fantastic, will definitely give you a breath of fresh of for something different.

Absolutely charming. I was ready to rate it near perfect 30 minutes in, but once the triplets show up . . . ugh. They are so annoying and disgusting that it nearly ruins the film. That aside, Chomet's style is so whimsical and nostalgic that it's impossible not to be taken in by it. Lovely film.

One of a kind. Funny, surreal, dark and gloomy, it effortlessly provokes heartfelt laughter, genuine sadness and a sense of suspense and wonder. It's a vivid, imaginative tale teeming with memorable characters and striking imagery. The theme song is great, the animation is amazing and the transitions from scene to scene are creative and fun. Perhaps even more laudably, it manages to convey so much - dejection, dreams, fears, determination, defiance - with almost no dialogue at all.

I just love when something like pops up - stories told with elegance and charm, even without a word being said. A true cartoon, also historically, is to me those that can tell a story in pictures only, and do not rely on silly jokes as many of Disney's do. It's so original and well thought-out, down to the very last detail. Cartoon-lovers MUST see this.
