Slump in the middle, but the first and last scenes are tremendous. Keach's best acting.

What a weird, weird movie. An extremely dark comedy about an executioner trying to save a woman on death row driven to more and more desperate means. The movie's flimsy in the middle, but when it hits it hits hard, and shows just how much America has changed in a century... or at least repressed.
