Some well done gags, a fun story, and a bittersweet ending.

The physical comedy, while a mixed bag, was mostly appealing. The Tramp himself comes off as a bit of a prick, so I don't see why I should care that everything ends as one would expect.

Quite possibly my favourite Chaplin short. This is really the film where Chaplin stopped portraying the tramp as this purely comic character, and started showing him as more of a fleshed out, tragic figure. Some bits in the middle kinda bored me, but the amazing ending made up for that.

Not bad, but mostly interesting as an indication of where Chaplin was trying to take things with the addition of more dramatic elements. Playing the villains as a straight threat works relatively well; but as nice as the final shot is, the ending feels somewhat tacked on in the absence of much actual interaction between Charlie and Edna to really make his departure feel meaningful. Still, OK physical comedy and a push in the right direction dramatically.

Definitely cute, not a masterpiece. I love Chaplin's clumsiness. The ending: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO =[

Funny little romance for Chaplin's tramp. Could do with a bit of a faster pace and less repetitiveness, but it has enough good gags and a sympathetic character to sustain it.

Definitive Chaplin. Would be even better if the supporting elements were up to the task.

An excellent early short film from Chaplin. This is the first of his shorts I've seen that really makes a go at injecting some pathos into the Tramp character. The final image of the film shows clearly shows this development in his artistry, and foreshadows his ending in Modern Times. The farm gags seem to work better than the fight gags here, but the film as a whole remains thoroughly enjoyable.
