Like so many of those costume dramas The Toy Wife suffers from being too romantic for it's own good. It forgets to play within all the style and elegance. The only one that stands out is Luise Rainer and her striking eyes! It's impossible not to be drawn into that dreamy gaze! Rainer really makes it watchable through the overly melodramatic parts and saves this from too boring. Plus one got to appreciate a film with such a insensitive moment as "I whishes I could be your own particular darkie."
