Watery, enchanted Venice provides the setting for this thriller starring Johnny Depp as an American tourist seeking solace there for his shattered heart -- only to find it in danger once again after encountering a beautiful Interpol agent (Angelina Jolie). Little does the poor Yank know that the artful agent has gone to great lengths to arrange their "chance" meeting and is using him to trap a criminal who also happens to be her ex-lover.

Johnny Depp's carreer's principle is to act very well in absolutely terrible films. Angelina's carreer's principle is to rely on her beauty and let the audience forget she's supposed to act. This is a movie that combines both.

Aside from being the first film to feature the memorable line "Get me Italian Interpol on the line!" (twice in the space of five minutes), there are few memorable scenes in von Donnersmarck's follow-up to the impressive "The Lives of Others". There are nods to classic Hollywood fare like "Charade" and "The Thomas Crown Affair", but cartoonish thugs, obvious plot twists, atrocious dialogue and a complete lack of chemistry between Depp and Jolie sinks this gondola emphatically.

Probably worse than I anticipated. The script was terrible and boring. The dialogue was cheesy and cringe-worthy. The score was laughably bad. Angelina Jolie was incredibly dull. And Johnny Depp... I usually really like his work, and he usually chooses good roles. But this? Dull character and an uninspiring performance from Depp. The only things I liked about it were the scenery in Venice and the Muse song in the credits. Suffice to say, I do not recommend seeing this film.

Very poor 'Thriller' with a terrible plot, script and cast. As much as I love Johnny Depp, there was no chemistry with that thing he was staring with. It all seemed too cheesy and far fetched for me. Only positive was getting to see a bit of Venice in the back drop.

Expected a lot more for the follow up of "The Lives of Others", but this is just about as weak as it gets. The story is just barely even passable, but there's just so little action and the chemistry is all wonky. The movie falls on it's face and takes about six steps back--while laying flat on the ground.

It's not really a bad movie, but it is an exercise in outstanding blandness. The leads seem to be mailing it in, though the terrible dialogue doesn't help, and the plot structure is just enough to get from point A too point B, but not enough to make anyone care about getting to point B. The couple of reveals are not only predictable but shoddily executed and symptomatic of the film as a whole. It passes the time without any big terribleness, but that's about it.

What a waste of good actors and location. A plodding and simplistic spy plot that is so by-the-numbers that it seems more tedious than entertaining, bland boring characters and a contrived twist ending that demolishes what little charm the film managed to wrangle out of the stale romantic formula. Watching a travel guide with the actors as hosts would have been infinitely more entertaining.

I don't know from where to start. Okay, let's say camera liked to shoot Angelina Jolie. What else? I really cannot find anything else to say. Oh, instead of the advertised missing shower scene, you can find a clip with naked buttocks of Jolie. Veiled. And Jolie's makeup was stunning. Was Johnny Depp in the movie? I cannot say. I think that one was somebody else. But I'm sure there was some areal views from Venice.

The story is silly, but that, to me, doesn't necessarily mean a movie is bad. What does make it bad is when the story is nonsense, the script is half-baked and the characters are so paper-thin that it's almost laughable. The Tourist is one such film, and that is disappointing, because, on paper, it sounded as if it would be good fun. As it turned out, it was about as much fun as toothache.

The movie opens with a conspicuous Interpol stakeout shadowing a mysterious femme fatale, Elise (Jolie), at a Parisian café. After receiving a secret message from a man the police are looking for, Elsie follows the message's instructions and evades her tail on a train to Venice. She's been asked to choose someone who looks like him--him being her estranged lover, a super-criminal of sorts.

im used to coming on here to find scathing reviews for a movie i liked, but typically thats because i like trashy action movies. i found this one to be elegant in its scenery, i enjoyed the pacing and found that there was enough chemistry between the leads to get by, and that when left on their own they both did well. it could have used more action certainly, and the ending was malevolently stupid. maybe ive just been watching too many 70s thrillers...i enjoyed the trip overall

Best considered a failed homage to the faux-Hitchcock films of Stanley Donen. It wholly lacks the 'jet-set' charm of the originals, which relied heavily on the exotic appeal of European locations. Here, instead, we are served with the cultural Disneyland that is Venice, and they can't even show us much of that, using many setting shots that suggest, rather than show, fine art.

Imagine if Hitchcock had lived 30 years longer and---so utterly confident in his formula of streamlined suspense, an everyman ensnared in a web of intrigue, a statuesque mystery woman, a clockwork thriller plot constructed out of chases, procedures, deceptions and glamorous locations, offset by a tongue-in-cheek vibe---not having changed his tune with the times in his final working days, would've simply continued making his brand. That's The Tourist. It's not just Hitchcockian. It's Hitchcock.

Course, most of Hitchcock's works managed to keep you guessing while the mystery was in progress and made sense when it was solved. Those are items The Tourist didn't pack in its luggage. It boasts some heavy-duty star wattage but never shakes its dim storyline. This is a two-hour escape from reality where the most meaningful thing we see is the closing credits. (pluggedin.com)

I enjoyed this movie. Usually thrillers are all action, all the time. Never really giving you a rest. This movie just put you on a nice tour of espionage and subversion. Jolie played her usual part as the seductive temptress. Depp really surprised me by the fact that he wasn't playing the part of Jack Sparrow for the 100th time. He played the part of a pretty normal guy, a math teacher actually. The twist at the end could easily be guessed but I'm glad it happened as it was a fun one.

Passable star vehicle for Depp and Jolie in the style of CHARADE, though to say it isn't in the same ball-park as CHARADE is probably an understatement. Jolie looks ravishing, as do gorgeous Venice locales; Depp has some fun in the establishing scenes but is pretty much a spent force by the half-way mark. Supporting cast studded with notable British character actors provide some interest, especially brief bit by Dalton, who actually looks like he is having fun for a change!

It's kind of like... Luxury porn. They spend a lot of time just showing you pretty landscapes, pretty shots of Venice, pretty boats, pretty hotel rooms with pretty interior design, pretty clothes and jewelry... And the movie coasts by on this material alone, making almost no effort to explain the plot until about an hour into the movie. I was frustrated after just 30 minutes when I realized I still had no idea what the BASIC plot of the movie was. Everyone looks appropriately bored in the movie.

The leads seem lost, have no chemistry, and don't seem to be into the project all that much. In fact, if you had to choose between this and the other "intriguing twosome" film of 2010 ("Knight and Day"), this would and should be the choice 10 times out of 10. Not exactly an engaging flick, a tad too predictable. Depp and Jolie do prove to have chemistry and that makes this film bearable during the middle. Despite the major flaws and the cliches that are included in The Tourist it proves to be a rather decent thriller. You cannot be too harsh a film that is nothing more then what it claims to be. I thought it was alright. I watched it with a girl which probably helped. Yes, it was formulaic; yes it leads you along by the hand like a kid; yes it has a plot twist that you can probably guess (I didn't but I wasn't trying very hard either, preferred to let the movie breathe and get there on its own, as I usually do). As usual, I find the armchair Criticker critics (once again, don't get uppity, I'm one of you) being overly harsh on phoned-in Oscar bait, but, my opinion, it's worth watching.

This had a very strong start and surprised me with the quality of cinematography (reminiscent of Moonraker). But as soon as the first twist hits it takes a major turn for the worse. Each subsequent twist gets dumber until the final one at the end which kind of wrecks the film. All the British actors are annoying here, and the police and gangsters have way too much screen time. However Johnny Depp is excellent, and the on-screen chemistry between he and Jolie is very fun to watch.
