Everyone rapes and abuses Lana Turner and then looks really shocked that she doesn't take it too well. Pretty lame.

I had to reduce the score, after seeing Richard Lester's adaptation.

"The Three Musketeers" presents the famous tale in a light-hearted, overly dramatic manner, reminiscent more of a musical than an action-adventure film. The sword fights resemble dance numbers, possibly influenced by Gene Kelly's style.

More sober than Lester's adaptations and I prefer Kelly to York. But I find swashbucklers intensely boring.

Plenty of fun to be had with The Three Musketeers (1948), but it's inconsistent and something is off-looking about it.. Sure, sometimes the action looked good, same as it also looked cheesy a equal amount. And while star-studded, the casting made it feel more like a comedy than the action spectacle it was aiming to be. The selection was either wasted or wasn't matching the characters. Take it as a lighthearted adaptation of The Three Musketeers and you'll be fine, for it is entertaining.

This movie makes a strong case for the unfilmability of the source material. Kelly had the agility to play d'Artagnan, but at age 35 he didn't make the most convincing 19-year-old rookie. The extreme condensation of the plot makes it incoherent to anyone who hasn't read Dumas's book. The heroes do little to earn the audience's sympathy, and Lana Turner just gets shit on throughout. But I can't deny the film has a certain charm that reminds me of an Errol Flynn movie.

Other than Price's predictable but pleasing Richelieu, the casting is hopeless across the board. Kelly's D'Artagnan is particularly obnoxious. Some solid swordplay, but most of what goes in between is dreary, and it goes on forever.

Sometimes you need to rate even a Gene Kelly movie lower than 50.

Lana Turner hotness/goodness. Awesome stunts. Gene Kelly is like an American Jackie Chan. Who looks a lot like Jean Dujardin. :P

Thoroughly miscast, poorly directed. A real mistake. But if Angela Lansbury had been Lady de Winter . . .
