The Thirteenth Hour

1927
Mystery
Barrymore plays Professor Leroy, who lives in a Charles Addams-style house, chock-full of trap doors, secret panels, and galloping furniture ... all of which he operates via a switchboard. You might guess that a chappy like Leroy would have no need of a hobby, but you'd be wrong. Periodically, Leroy goes forth to commit a moonlight murder, which he is always careful to perpetrate at one o'clock in the morning. (Hence the movie's title.)

Most of what I've read about The Thirteenth Hour (1927) has been negative, but I enjoyed it. Sure, it's silly cold school horror, but that's what makes it so entertaining. Doesn't matter if the cops are dumb or that there is a stupid lady stumbling around in this old dark house doing slapstick. For it's more or less a horror parody, adding a Rin Tin-Tin like dog for even more absurdity. A farce, with laughs and suspense. Very much suited for Lionel Barrymore ugly mug!
