Well shit I liked it. It doesn't have the special effects of The Matrix. It's not as cerebral as Dark City but it does have a good style unto itself. I think the big problem was that it came out after Dark City and The Matrix so basically this movie has been done before, twice, and it was done better, twice. Still that's not to say it's bad because it's not. As its own film it's good but when compared to The Matrix or Dark City it's just subpar.

In movies timing is everything. If this had been made around the time of the original novel (impressively written in the 60s. As is most of the great sci-fi. People must have been so starved of wonderous things in that decade), this would have been an all time classic. Sadly, by the time this came out, you'd already seen Fassbinder's version, 'Virtuosity' (if you were so lucky) and you'd be standing in a video store, chosing between this and 'The Matrix'... A fine lowbudget effort nonetheless.

Incredibly trippy film. I saw the ending coming, but it was still hard to follow the implications throughout the film. If you're a fan of dark, noir, sci-fi films, or Philip K. Dick, you'll likely end up really enjoying this movie. Didn't get a lot of attention when it came out because the Matrix blew everyone away, so if you missed this one, it's a nice surprise to go back and see what you missed.

I love these kind of movies, and even though it came out after The Matrix, The Truman Show, and Dark City, I think it can hold its own against them. I love the stylistic approach to each level, and the ending that reminds you that even the top level is in a sense a simulation. Plus, sci-fi noir is a wonderful genre mix that doesn't get enough screen time in my opinion.

I really did not expect this to be that good. Surprise surprise. It started off kind of ordinary but then it just got better and better. A cast full of un- or little known actors perform solidly and that even in multiple roles. Oh how I wish I could try to live in the social upper class of 1937, that would be a blast.

1999 were great for "this world is virtual reality" sci-fi flicks. As "Matrix" is most known and critically acclaimed, and "eXistenZ" is successful on different approach, this film is a bit of let down for me. It is less ambitious, calmer, and some of the sci-fi bits are interesting, but it's focus on romance is very unwelcome and poorly done.

The exposition could use a lot of work: it's neither as educational nor as tantalizing as it could be. Once it gets going, though, this is a tight and well-written sci-fi piece with a cyber-noir romantic angle. It seems aimless at first; with the final reveals I couldn't help thinking that this was exactly what people would do if they had that sort of power. That bit is dark and ugly and made me want to hug this movie like it was a William Gibson novel.

I guess this whole "dude, what if none of this is REAL?!" thing was a big part of the late 20th century zeitgeist. But while The Matrix will be remembered for quite some time by virtue (pun intended) of being an exciting sci-fi/action flick with a few interesting ideas in it, The 13th Floor is already virtually (pun intended) forgotten, and justifiably so. It isn't terrible, it just isn't very interesting.

Cyber-noir with a 'computer simulation theory' plot. Similar reality questioning films have been done but maybe not quite in this computer-focused way, which anticipates simulation theories that became very popular 20 years after its release.

This movie has all the right concepts to work, but fails to put them together in anything like the right way. It doesn't establish what the normal is before things get weird, it leaves out a ton of necessary exposition and expects the audience to pick up the pieces, and the different characters played by the same actors are simultaneously not linked enough and not distinguished enough. It feels like the writer/director didn't know how fit the miniseries he was adapting into movie length.

One of the rare films that benefits from playing alongside The Matrix in the tightly integrated cinematic circuitry of 1999. Exceptionally cool cinematography and shot design (hope you like fogging - I do!). Plotting and dialogue wants for complexity (and a little suspense) by comparison to its blockbuster sibling, but all the many familiar faces involved are on fine form, especially ever-charismatic Bierko in the lead and always-adorable Mol. Classic millennial banger in the end credits, too.

Well, in retrospect, you can see how the Matrix cut its legs. Not as flashy as the Matrix, this one still holds up. If you enjoy B, or as close to B as possible but not exactly B-class movies, this one is for you. It is a decent non-noir film noir.

They killed this movie by making it drag in Act II; the basic plot is somewhat ingenious because it makes the simulation "alive," but otherwise the predictable world-within-world proxy for religion that we have come to expect. The male lead does shock and surprise well, but nothing else, and the female lead is adorable and competent but with zero chemistry. I enjoyed it but it moves too slowly in the lead-up to really hit the big time.

This one does not bring something fresh to the table since World on A Wire. In fact, I find it quite mind-boggling how they managed to make such a cheesy film out of a philosophical subject. They just squared the circle!

Pretty enjoyable concept Sci-Fi, sure it is cheesy and pretty ridiculous but, that 1930s aesthetic just makes me wish I could travel in time in an Assassins Creed type Animus thing. You are never bored is it what I am trying to say, pretty easy viewing which at times tests the brain in a fun way.

Sure, it's a B-movie (although it could have been much worse), sure the theme has already been explored, but it was fun trying to figure out the twists before they happen. It also gives time to think about consciousness and simulation and meaning.

Poorly written, directed and performed B-movie, or in other words, about as good as the poorly written, directed and performed TV-series that came out a quarter of a century earlier based on the same Galouye novel (from 1964). Someone should splice all these kinds of movies together so that they become just the various levels of one vast multi-dimensional simulation. It would go for about 183 hours, and then loop back to the start: maybe Elon Musk could finance it in order to spread the Word.

If you like 'Dark City' and 'The Matrix', this is for you. The film isn't as excellent as Daniel F. Galouye's groundbreaking novel from 1964 - and not quite as great as Fassbinder's adaptation, 'World on a Wire', either - but the concept and the twists from said novel are still utterly amazing.

Watched at 1.23. Cool sci-fi to the 30s virtual world concept. Be "real" people that go back to their "real" lives after but both are affected by it. Like memories mixing. Becoming each other. Hit stride 55m. Momentum began like 20m before. Hoped the assistant swapped evil with his fake bartender self's good. Meeting the daughter's other self and SHE had de ja vu this time was cool. Wow thousands of sim worlds/users. Die and you switch great ending. Bartender out. Daughter+Douglas love in future

It's a grind to reach any real eye opening scenes @ around the 75 minute mark. Everything is pretty static until that point with some uninteresting plot turns coupled with the bland, awkward dialogue being poorly ADR'd over despite most scenes taking place in an empty, quiet, completely sound controllable room. Even after the scene's around 75:00, the weightlessness returns. Not an enjoyable user experience to say the least..well, unless you're young, impressionable & named Christopher Nolan.

Craig Bierko always seemed miscast whenever he would pop up in one of these hammy '90s outings, but it's surprising to see a lackluster performance from D'Onofrio, which is less his fault than a product of the banality and ham-fistedness in the dialogue and characterizations, which make it hard to keep engrossed, but not too hard, as the plot, save for its characteristically '90s cop-out ending, is undeniably intriguing food for thought about questioning one's reality and identity.

Although the plot device and character development of the film isn't crystallized and refined as it could've been, the comprehensive premise of the direction it advanced down fared onwards undaunted and unencumbered. Woven into the web of late 90's simulated reality films engaged in an wholly vicarious nature; it unfortunately was bestowed under the imperious shadow that The Matrix seemed to cast upon other films that define this particular era. However, it still stands as a rousing narrative.

The Thirteenth Floor is one of the truly fun virtual reality (VR) movies out that have been produced. This movie has everything from a fun film noir settings in a VR simulation, to pure mind fuck scenes, to great VR effects. The story catches you from the beginning and picks up speed as it goes. To top it off, Thirteenth Floor is loaded with style.

The mix of sci-fi and noir look works fine and the idea works, but the rest is not correctly done. All lines sound cheesy, some actions (I won't tell because they're spoilers) are absurd, the main star is overacted... Probably the book works much better, and it has the merit of being first, unlike this movie, as the concept was done in film far better before, during and after this movie. All of them work better than this one in most things and can be considered better adaptations of the concept.

I thought this was quite stylish actually. If you abandon thinking about it as though a comment of Cartesian philosophy, and something more about its layers of fantasy and eroticism, it's much more interesting. The 'real' woman Mrs Fuller is a voyeur, as is Mr Fuller. Much like we can fall in love with Grace Kelly as Frances Stevens... Plus, faux-noir is always such fun.

If you've seen this, you don't have to watch Inception anymore. Am I saying Inception got nearly all its ideas from this movie and thus is undeserving of so much prase? Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying! Great acting by Gretchen Mol and Armin Mueller-Stahl and a pretty good story. I'm surprised this movie isn't that well known.. although they should have worked harder on the middle part of the movie.. That was pretty boring. Beginning and the end were great.

First of all, this was very, very strange to see (not knowing anything about it) right after Inception. On its own terms, it's competent, and it wears its "twists" on its sleeve so I don't think that's the point. Fun and entertaining, it just doesn't reach the psychological or creative heights its genre peers do.

Telegraphing the twist(s) so early means this really plods along while the characters struggle to catch up. Not only that but the premise distances you from caring about any of the characters - as one of them puts it "nothing I do matters". Along with the fact these science fiction concepts have been trotted out previously, this comes off as rather bland and not the least bit involving.

The summer is full of these pictures, and one after another they continue to entertain me. My biggest criticism is the reliance on the head shot, & getting so tired of the preview before the movie comes out, fortunately the preview is a little misleading.
