This Tod Browning movie is hilarious for the screaming exaggerations! One of the first sound movies for most of these guys and they didn't really know how to do it yet, so the attempts at acting becomes almost more scary then the actual murder mystery! It says a lot when Bela Lugosi comes across as one of the most normal people on the screen!

The distance between Browning's good and bad movies is so broad.

It's hard to judge this, as it is such an early sound movie with expected technical problems. Very stagey, with a mystery that didn't totally make sense, but this was enjoyable as a piece of history if nothing else. Great costumes, too.

Stagey whodunit found Browning struggling to adapt to sound. Worth it for fans who are curious about his first pairing with Lugosi, who is often not mentioned as a participant but is easily the best thing about it.
