Movies just don't get any bigger than this. Everything in this movie is huge - the cast, the scope, the effects, the themes, the music, the performances, the running time, etc. No director or studio would dare attempt this today.

As epic as epics can get, The Ten Commandments stands heads and shoulders above all else that deals with this subject matter. Casting the legendary Charlton Heston as Moses was a good choice, and Yul Brynner does an equally exquisite job as the hard-hearted Pharoah. Visually stunning even by today's standards, and certainly one of the strongest narratives you'll be able to find anywhere. You don't have to be religious to understand the beauty of this story, but it can't hurt.

Vincent Price slithering into frame in a barely there golden top. "Epic". I've spent more time watching the Ten Commandments during the holidays then I have with my extended family.

A great epic film. My favourite bit is the many, many times that Moses and the Hebrews talk about how slavery is bad, slavery is evil, no God would approve of slavery, etc. Yeah ummm...read a few Bible pages after the Exodus and...let's just say...the Hebrews and God have a bit of a change of heart on ol' slavery...

Ever since my 10-year old self was awed by "Spartacus", I've been a sucker for epics. Yes, in the first part, some scenes became so tongue-in-cheek over the years that they felt like a Blackadder-episode. But I found myself swept away by the sheer scope of the production, the magnificent soundtrack, and the ever reliable Charlton Heston. Hopefully, this film will last as the definitive retelling of the Moses-story, instead of that wretched "Exodus: Gods and Kings."

This is the thing I enjoy the most about the special TV programming for holy week, every year I watch this movie and every time I find it more captivating, kind of a tradition. This is the second time Cecil B. DeMille made "The Ten Commandments" and it shows, it has a really fine storytelling and remarkable performances. It may look outdated, but man those Anne Baxter's dresses are something else.

It's an enjoyable film, as long as you keep in mind the time period in which it was made and the spectacle that it was. By today's standards, yes, it's very much overacted, the effects are frighteningly bad (the Burning Bush and God's Finger, for example), it's heavy handed and corny. BUT it has a good message and it's worth watching.

The Ten Commandments is a sprawling epic of biblical proportions. You know you're in for a big deal when God is the focal point of your story. What sticks out for me about this one is the costume and set designs. The elegant gowns, the dirty and ratty cloaks, Pharaoh's antechamber, the hills of Sinai. A lot of passion is crammed into this movie and it really shines through. Even if you aren't particularly religious, I feel that this film will compel and entertain you.

You probably know what to expect, it's a long biblical epic with no expense spared. It holds up pretty well for what it is, though it's much longer than it needs to be. Not really my cup of tea but I didn't mind watching it once.

We know the story and it is a good one, sure, but at such a massive length, DeMille's picture does bore at times and, even if it is an impressive production, it feels a bit dry on the whole. Epic, but not exactly great.

DeMille's defining characteristic, for better or worse, is that there's no difference between intimate character scenes and thousand-extra vistas. All are equally bombastic, sweeping in emotion and gravitas. So his characters may be broad caricatures, but they have a grand, emotional punch. His vistas may be gaudy, but there's a surprising intimacy allowed. Narrative fidelity be damned.

Great sets, technicolor, and some great scoring. Hilariously cheesy writing & acting from everyone but Charlton, especially Nefertari/Yul Brynner. Great early SFX, though a little let down considering the hype of this epic. hilarious horned mock-viking helmets on the egyptian guards Impressed however by attention to detail on the set - correct cartouches from a cursory glance!

Worse than similar stuff that was maligned later (e.g. Cleopatra), just extremely wooden through and through. Also while he works in pulpy stuff like Planet of the Apes, Heston is pretty terrible in serious roles and does nothing here to elevate it. Even Yul Brynner is boring!

Beautiful 'imagery' and 'wordings' ( made by the filmmakers) The rest is a Hoax. Why had you/they forgotten to mention the 'fact' that God 'hardened' 'Rameses' 'heart' every single time so just he, god, could be so sadistic!?

It seems likely that only DeMille could have made such a film; holding up the virtues of the scriptures, in particular the ten commandments, while at the same time undermining some of those very same commandments (for example the very strong undercurrent of sexuality and sensuality that DeMille seems to exhort to viewers). Heston shows flashes of the 'real' Moses but often all you see is Heston, and the same goes for Robinson as Dathan. Baxter, however, as Nefretiri really is a queen.

This isn't my favorite golden age epic but there is no doubt that this is the very definition of the word. The amount of money thrown at this project is obvious in the huge cast, hundreds of extras, massive sets, state-of-the-art (for the time) effects, and the larger-than-life score. None of this would mean a thing if the core story wasn't as strong as it is. Heston might not be the best choice for Moses but he certainly gives it his all.

An absolute blast - DeMille's legendary second go-round with this tale is a lavish and invigorating dose of piously earnest storytelling, offset by a welcome sense of humour (Price and Anderson gnashing at the corners are both terrific) and rock solid work by the entire cast, headed by ideal Heston and Brynner, and fine support from Hardwicke, Baxter etc. Leans into the absurd in its staging of its epic crowd and battle scenes, but also knows how to make them genuinely impressive and thrilling.

Its staginess often has un unexpected comical effect. This is the kind of movie where you can come up with a lot of funny remarks to make everybody laugh, if you have this tendency. Deserves attention as a museum piece, not as a work of art.

The Ten Commandments is lavish, over-the-top, booming, excessive and highly detailed. There are probably as many faults as there are positives. Too many to go over considering its considerable length. Overall the film is an enjoyable bible inspired story worth its huge reputation.

As a fantasy film beats Lord Of The Rings trilogy and such anytime. But has scenes of little children getting killed which I didn't need to see, especially as a child myself when we were made to watch it during some religious event. I would give this a much higher score if it didn't get so graphic with its dying children. (It's probably not even graphic by today's cinema standards, but it's just disturbing topic to some of us and thus should be handled as such.)

The dialogue is too literary and prosey to elucidate anyone as a character, especially when each character's dialogue sounds identical in flowery verbosity. The only actor who feels like a human being is Edward G. Robinson, and Brynner and Baxter have undeniable presence. But a legendary story so precious and traditional as this had to be brought to extravagant cinematic life, and the use of color and optical effects is almost worth the ultimately excessive running time.

Combines the spirit of Moses with that of Christ in order to come upon themes of freedom and justice. A marked improvement on the source, The Five Books of Moses, which were quite simply about the Chosenness, if you will, of the Hebrews. Neither Yaweh nor The Torah has any qualms with slaves as long as they are owned by Hebrews. It has no problem with brute murderousness as long as it gets the Israelites even one step closer to securing the land of Canaan. Yeah. Good writing. Bad acting.

The greatest sin this commits is creating the most boring onscreen Moses conceivable. It takes 50 minutes for him to show any hints of personality and after meeting with the bush on Sinai he just becomes an overzealous robot. It's not just Heston either, it's on the script level, half the scenes that should be structured around Moses instead follow the point of view of some usually trivial supporting character. This is Moses' quest as lived by bystanders, and it drags.

Films are often given the tag 'epic' without really deserving it. This isn't one of them. The scope of the story is vast and the subject matter about as profound as it gets. That said you can enjoy this film without treating it as a religious film. The cinematography, set design, costume and score are well ahead of their time and deeply impressive. The acting is solid in the main with a few hammy moments but still well worth watching
