IF IT DOESN'T WIN EVERY AWARD FOR ANIMATION THIS YEAR I WILL SCREAM FOR 8 CENTURIES AND YOU WILL ALL SUFFER. ALL OF YOU. 8 CENTURIES OF SCREAMING TO COME IF SOME DERIVATIVE AMERICAN ANIMATED MOVIE BEATS THIS GLORIOUSLY BITTERSWEET TALE WITH INCREDIBLY MATURE WRITING AND ANIMATION. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED.

This was such a lovely film. It's a nice story, feeling familiar and unfamiliar at the same time. The animation is absolutely beautiful, feeling like a Japanese watercolour painting come to life. It was truly a wonder to watch. It's not as sad as the director's earlier film, Grave of the Fireflies (1988), but it's certainly emotional, in a good way. I still prefer Hayao Miyazaki's Studio Ghibli films, but this was a wonderful experience.

Like the best Studio Ghibli films, it has the ability to transport you into another time and place. This adaptation of the classic Japanese folk tale about a bamboo cutter who discovers a tiny princess and raises her as his daughter employs minimalistic animation that is simple but stunningly beautiful and suites the storybook feel of the movie. Also the most emotional Ghibli film that I've seen, with many laugh out loud moments and also extremely sad at times.

Like all of Takahata’s best films ‘Kaguya’ is a film entrenched and totally dependant in its own subtlety. Takahata commands the viewer give more of themselves to the experience the longer the film goes on, and like all Takahata’s this does ‘go on!’ A visual masterpiece of extraordinary depth and insight. Watching in the original Japanese is a must, as with most all Ghibli’s something almost indescribable is lost in the English dub. A fitting finale to Takahata’s legacy.

Let's start with the good things: The movie looks amazing. When the animators allow the visuals to shine, they truly shine brightly. Unfortunately, I knew this movie would bore me to death 5 minutes into the story. And oh dear god, did it do its worst to bore me. The fairytale like structure made everthing incredibly obvious and repetetive. Yes, its a tragic tale, but it absolutely did not work for me. Cut 45 minutes and it would have been fine. Why is this movie so long?

It's a cute enough little movie that makes some attempts at interesting visual and narrative ideas, but never explores them fully enough to be effective. The lead character is conceptually great, but she never develops a personality. She instead becomes a vessel for a rather rote piece of fantasy storytelling and a not very well executed message about living life to the fullest or something to that effect. There's so much potential peeking out but very little of it is realized.

I have nothing but respect for the unique artistry and subtle ambition of this film... But I'm not sure how much I actually LIKED it. The courting at the mansion just seemed to go on and on and on, and the tone just very muted the whole way through. There were standout moments of good old Ghibli greatness throughout though.

I like the drawings; they're very pretty in fact, with the best sequence being when Kaguya flees from the palace and they change style into furious outlines. But as a whole this is ponderous, obvious, sentimental, and endless. Extra points for anybody who can make sense of the Buddha angle.

I love the animation style of it, I think it's crudeness is more comforting and adorable than if it had a more professional and detailed animated style. The story of this reluctant princess is interesting on a scene -for-scene basis, but the overall progression of her character is so ancient that every defiant decision by her is very obvious and predictable, making this overlong film feel even more tiring.

Absolutely one of the best films I've seen all year, animation or otherwise. The simplistic and gorgeous animation helps tune the audience more in to the story, the writing, and the voice acting (all of which are beyond phenomenal). This emotional Japanese folktale will surely be remembered as one of the greatest pieces Ghibili has produced. By any means possible, go see this film.

Ravishingly animated, beautifully scored, told with superlative directness and sensitivity, this adaptation of a 10th century Japanese folk story about a Celestial being who goes to experience the joys and sorrows of earthly life by being adopted by a bamboo cutter and his wife might just be as filled with pain, magic and poignancy as any film in Studio Ghibli's filmography.

A fable or folktale (apparently based on a real Japanese folktale) tells a fairly familiar story with a few twists and a lovely watercolor art style that feels purposefully underbaked at times in a way that is very effective for this story. It gets especially beautiful whenever she runs. Another winner from Ghibli.

Visually stunning, beautifully told story just a little too long. I really loved the score and animation style. I think the only draw backs to this story is that is you don't already know the story or some history of the culture some of the impact and motivations will be lost. The second being even at 130 minutes the ending feels a bit rushed and underwhelming.

Overlong, and very methodically, even stiflingly paced, but there is a restrained beauty and charm to this that I find more generally appealing than Miyazaki’s more overstated style – Takahata seems a more grounded and earthy director to the film’s benefit, and this tells a warm and emotionally resonant story of negotiating life and familial/customary bonds, perfectly enacted by the U.S. voice dub of Caan, Steenburgen and Moretz.

I liked the animation, for the most part, and the soundtrack was pretty nice. But the story, the pacing, the characters are all very weak, ridiculously predictable and shallow. Dubious messages. The main character has no personality. Why is this film so long, yet has so little to say? For a 2014 film it also has some highly problematic views and scenes. Avoid!

"It is like a circle, when one ends, the other one begins. So you can always count on it to keep on moving." If there ever was a quote to in every way describe the surreal and metaphorical journey that is is this film, then this would be it. Great story, visual beauty. Unique art style & very pleasing. Compelling soundtrack. Tiny gripe, a tad too long for its own good; should have been 1.5hr not 2hr. Some snips here and there might make for an overall better watch experience.

Beautiful and unique art style - this movie is a feast for the eyes. Intriguing beginning sets up the movie greatly, but only gets bogged down by the tedious and grating middle parts which more than overstayed their welcome - gladly it picks up again at the ending. Overall, didn't manage to grip me much at all and became a bit of a bore at times. Nevertheless, sprinkled with standout moments and it has a fantasting soundtrack to accompany the folktale.

Every frame leaps past its borders with sound and drawing giving the image a depth far beyond its style, which at first glance appears simplistic but was probably just as difficult to achieve as an image of greater complexity. What are the demands of society and what is happiness within those demands? The film flows effortlessly between being funny, being sad, being joyous, being everything in-between and is always beautiful.

I kept thinking about the kid with cancer who chose to be cryogenically frozen -- telling a judge what she'd like to have done with her dead body in the hope that a cure might be found someday. What are we to each other? The paths we choose and have chosen for us; with whom do we live? How do we deal with death, with the death of our dearest? I weep because I can't cope. And I need joy or peace, or it's too much to bear. "I stand alone, and think, Till Love and Fame to nothingness do sink."

The impressionist style of animation is really stunning at times. I love how changeable it is - it gets really messy and erratic when Kaguya is distressed, especially during the "dream sequence" where she runs away. The story does lull a bit in the middle, but the vibrant opening third and the weird, bittersweet ending both make up for this. It ultimately holds the painful duality of human emotions above the concept of being able to feel nothing but harmony.

A very pleasant animated tale with several moments of real emotion where the hand-drawn characters transcend the boundaries of their medium and create a real connection. Visually quite different from the usual Japanese cartoon style, and better for it. Perhaps the film also suffers from staying true to the traditional source material, whereas Western animators would have tweaked it to be more emotionally manipulative. Must share this film and watch it again one day.

A truly sad tale about a kid brought by the moon by a bamboo -- and then leaving back to the moon, rising to the sky as a princess. The last shot is the baby Kaguya being shown on the face of the moon, because that's how our parents see us -- the very baby they carried when we were born.

There's nothing quite like thinking you're going to see basically a Disney movie in Japanese and then Ghibli punches you in the gut with feels. Takahata wisely distances himself from Miyazaki with the watercolour and pencil style of the movie, but the story is not far from the old master's works. If you are a person with intelligence, taste and a Playstation, you will have played Okami and this will feel like a great spin-off of the game, complete with the rich bittersweetness of fine chocolate.

I want to give this movie a 100, I really do, but I could not stand the ending. The whole movie seems to be building on the theme that controlling a person's life and making decisions for them is wrong; you should let them be free and choose for themselves how to live. I guess you could argue that because of how tragic the conclusion is that that message still comes across, but tonally, a happier ending would have felt more appropriate. Aside from that, it's a masterpiece.

This tragic tale makes explicit the importance of appreciating the earth, and carries with it a pretty profound suspicion of human culture and the ways we damage our humanity by removing ourselves from the natural world. The watercolor animation is often stunning, never more so than in Kaguya's dream sequence as she races away from the family compound in a fury. I'd like to see the film trimmed down a bit--the character arcs are too simple to carry a 138 minute film.

Another really good shot by Ghibli. Takahata is arguably the second best of the Ghibli directors, but he gives Miyazaki a run for his money here, as the animation is absolutely stunning. It's a completely gorgeous, unique film, with one of Joe Hisiashi's best scores, that evokes a fairy-tale tone so thoroughly entrancing that you feel like a small child being told this story for the first time. Spectacular work from Takahata, possibly the equal of Grave of the Fireflies. The animation is inspired by water-color paintings, but there are alterations in style fitting the different moods of the story - I've never seen anything quite like it. The style is highly original and every frame is picturesque. The content veers from strange and unusual to tacky, but seems merited for a fairytale. I adored how Japanese this was in every way - it's full of this "Japanicana".
