I only come across two kinds of people in the real world: people I can tolerate for more than eight seconds and people that don't like The Stuff. Edit: personal aside/tidbit: I own a The Stuff shirt with the brand logo, wear it all the time, and have never received a comment of any kind on it.

A pretty random mix of consumerist culture satire and terribly amusing (or amusingly terrible) 80's schlock. The main adult character is a frustrating combination of Tim Heidecker's dickish 'Decker' character and Lindsey Graham. Every scene where The Stuff is oozing around is fun and I enjoyed the gross physical effects, but most human interactions or plot reveals just kinda baffled or annoyed me. I guess I just didn't have the right stuff ha ha ha h-[disintegrates into a white foamy puddle]

I enjoyed this far more than I should have. The underlying themes just about emerge from the schlock, and there is plenty to enjoy in the performances of Moriarty and Sorvino when he turns up. I'm not sure if this is meant to be a comedy, a horror or a drama, but it feels like campy good fun, if a little rough round the edges. Cheesily enjoyable.

This satirical sci-fi/horror/comedy is a delightfully campy 80's B-movie. Although there are a few genuinely creepy moments, the movie is mostly a cheesy good time in its very 80's anti-consumerism/corporate satire. Enough is never enough.

Love The Stuff. Good dig at consumerism and advertising. Not sure what the point of the Chocolate Chip character was besides being there to make silly comments about his hands being lethal weapons. Very good VFX except for some bad green screens. Fav scene: attack in motel bedroom.

When sitting down to write a horror movie, and the scariest thing you can think of is Cool Whip and being betrayed by Famous Amos, you might be Larry Cohen. You should also close your kitchen cupboards before writing.

I expected to have a big ol' pile of crap spread in front of me on this one, but I was pleasantly surprised. "The Stuff" is even cheesy by mid-80's standards, though it's not the effects that make it so. What makes "The Stuff" a watchable movie is not that it doesn't take it's self seriously (it kind of does), but the fact that no viewer in their right mind could take it seriously. So put this on your to-watch list for forgotten 80's schlock horror flicks.

Cohen's movies are notorious for getting chopped up but this one is nearly ruined by its poor editing; characters seem to disappear entirely, action scenes are impossible to follow, day turns to night in a matter of seconds, etc. Of course it's a lot of fun to watch, and probably wasn't going to be Cohen's masterwork either way, but like the titular Stuff it leaves you wanting more.

Cheap, sly fun from quirky Larry Cohen. My favourite bit is at the start, where the Stuff comes bubbling up out of the ground and someone immediately taste-tests it. Michael Moriarty is to Larry Cohen what Marcello Mastroianni is to Fellini, and the world would be a better place if he were in all of Cohen's films.

The Stuff should be a terrible film. It's actors are almost entirely wooden, it's script is lackluster and the editing ensures that almost no excitement is even possible. However it's anti-Regan message is certainly poignant. While I wouldn't go so far as to call The Stuff a good film it's certainly a decent one that's campy enough to give enough entertainment for a single viewing.

Shades of INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS and DR. STRANGELOVE can be found in this criticism of consumerism and the junk food industry, but it’s best to temper one’s expectations. Michael Moriarty gives an amusingly hammy performance but Paul Sorvino gets most of the best lines. Look out for Eric Bogosian. Brooke Adams shows up too. For those in the mood for it, it’s fairly fun.

The main actor's performance is the single most BIZARRE leading performance you will ever see. Everything he does is like an alien doing a terrible job of pretending to be human, but the character is just supposed to be a normal dude. It's hard to argue that The Stuff isn't awful, but it's also extremely entertaining and highly quotable with lines like "Everybody has to eat shaving cream once in a while" and "No one is as dumb as I appear to be."

It has moments of pretty sharp satire, strong performances from Moriarty, Sorvino, Marcovicci & others, & very solid practical effects (apart from a certain green screen). It also has some decent comedy, & has remained mostly unique in the decades since it was made. That said, it also feels incredibly slow for most of its runtime, & the pacing is ridiculously off. It's definitely worth a look for horror/sci-fi fans, but there's really nothing too special about it.

Cohen generally pulled off this scrappy offbeat satirical horror-comedy that is essentially a throwback to 1950's horror updated for the hyper consumerist 80's. It's about how both advertising and addictive food chemicals have colonised our bodies and minds, hijacking our neural circuitry, and the amusingly broad characters are played with enthusiasm by B movie staples. The charmingly simple special effects are an added bonus to this loopy tale of corporate greed and consumer complicity.

Michael Moriarty's acting is so fucking strange in this film. He's such a male chauvinist that it becomes ironic and comical. At times I think he's not human. I really enjoyed the commercial satire aspect of the film, but boy oh boy was there some horrible acting going on. It's definitely a cult classic, but could also benefit from a re-make.....in the right hands. Imagine what things Tarantino or John Waters could do with the Stuff!

I thought I was loving it and then I realised I'd been bored for like half an hour, coincidentally about the same amount of time Garrett Morris had been missing. The satire pretty much comes to "Hey isn't it crazy they used to put cocaine in everything?" and it doesn't take very long to get there, so the rest of the movie is...Paul Sorvino I guess. Sometimes it feels like I started watching a TV show halfway through season 2.

This is kind of my baseline for what I expect out of a B-movie. Is it good? Not really. But it's competent and engaging and takes its pulpy plot just seriously enough to make you actually interested in what's happening but still maintains a lighthearted silly mood appropriate to the material. Despite a number of glaring weaknesses once the whole thing picks up steam it rolls right along with its crazy little allegory for consumerism and drug addiction. It's silly fun.

This is a simple parable for how gullible and credulous consumerism makes people. It is designed to be a B film, so if you are looking for high art or coffeehouse cinema, this ain't it, but this is a solidly entertaining movie that hits too close to home for this denizen of the modern wasteland. Especially if you like Mad Magazine, slapstick, or dark humor like Charles Bukowski and Hunter S. Thompson, this movie will be a fun but uneasy watch.

I hadn’t seen this since a sleepover when I was 9 and my nostalgia is probably the only reason it doesn’t get a lower mark. Despite the interesting premise/plot and some deeper commentary on all-out capitalism it really is quite a poor film. Competently professional in parts but most scenes look like they were one shot with no rehearsal and the actors clueless as to where the camera is or what they should be reacting to. One that could actually benefit from an earnest modern remake.

B-movie satire on consumerism that riffs on the whole Invasion of the Bodysnatchers concept with globs of The Blob thrown in and a quirky tone. Too choppy, hokey and downright silly to be considered good; but it has its own weird, internal logic that's hard not to surrender to. Performances and dialogue are mostly bad and character relationships mature about as quickly as it takes to shake a hand, but the lead seems to have enough sly charm to carry things along most of the time.

It has a 80s camp corniness, f.e. Paul Sorivno as an anti-communist militia leader with his private army, that one will see as either giving the movie its amusing charm or as proof how bad this is, I come out slightly more on the former side. Of course it's all a very obvious satire on consumerism. It's extremely rushed in places, like the ending which seem like Cohen ran out of time/budget and just put in an some exposition afterwards.

A fun (and not actually appetising) concept that digs into junk-food consumerism -- I can guarantee I'd be all over the Stuff if I were in this film. Unfortunately, this film expands its scale out a bit too much, feeling too much like a kids adventure film at times (the wild predictable contrivances and overly-eager music score don't help). Could've scaled back and improved its social critique, but at least there is meat to these bones. "Are you eating it, or is it eating you?"

Simplistic story and poor direction are somewhat made up for by funny characters, memorably gross effects, and the occasional Ghostbusters-style quip. It's tempting to call the film anti-consumerist a la They Live, but close analysis suggests more the attitude of a child who won't eat their vegetables.

A kind of Ben and Jerry's version of _The Blob_, this features good performances from Moriarty as a dumb-smart industrial spy and Sorvino as a right-wing survivalist who comes off as sort of a combination of Sylvester Stallone and Jonathan Winters; though it doesn't always work, it's never dull.
