Highly enjoyable fictionalisation of the Seabiscuit saga (a few wincingly dated ethnic stereotypes aside) which doesn't break any new ground, but works thanks mostly to sincere performances from Temple and McCallister, and a scene-stealing one from Fitzgerald as Temple's irascible uncle. Cleverly interweaves actual (and exciting) racing footage of the real Seabiscuit into its story.

The romance is kind of creepy (Knowles confesses his love within like, a week) but it's okay.

My second horse movie of the day. Ugh. This one was a fine family movie, but had some bad aspects which dragged it down. The black guy was acting if he was Stepin Fetchit, and he wasn't even good at it. And then the was the Irish accepts which they thankfully dropped early on. Shirley Temple was sweet, though, but felt partially irrelevant to the story of the great racing horse Seabiscuit. Temple might have been the draw, but it was old Barry Fitzgerald that made the film as good as it was.
