Part of that power comes from the way this film is constructed. The intimately vicious depictions of Soraya's death will likely remain in viewers minds for the rest of their lives. But could the same impact have been engineered without them? I don't know. But I would hope so, and I question whether such explicit brutality has to be given such prominent screen time in order for these kinds of stories to carry weight.

I have such mixed feelings about this. I tend to dislike "message movies," and even if there's nothing particularly contemptuous or preachy about this film, nor is it very insightful. It's obvious and one-note. It does compel you to keep watching with some building suspense, but part of me feels that's only in anticipation of the film's title being realized. At least the acting is good, and some authenticity is achieved by the cast and location.

date viewed: 8/1/10...based on a true story. shohreh aghdashloo is fantastic as zahra. the movie derives its power by building the tension slowly but inevitably towards its tragic ending. warning: the stoning scene is very bloody and agonizingly drawn out...i did feel however that it was not gratuitous. verdict: highly recommended.

I suspect this film may attract its low ratings for just how shocking the stoning was. But how could this film, in good conscience, do anything but show every nuance of this atrocity? Not only the impacts of rocks, but the sickening customs that order their throws and the farcical 'trial' that convicts Soraya. Sharia law is nothing more than a shell game, where the cards are stacked in the favour of ambitious men. This film describes that game in vivid detail.

Recommended viewing, maybe, for anyone who, in order to be convinced of the barbarity of the practice, needs to see the full cold-blooded preparations of burying the woman up to her hips with arms pinioned at her sides, needs as well to see every blood-drawing stone thrown — some of them in slow-motion, the first few of them thrown preferentially by father, husband, and sons — and needs in addition for the victim to be completely innocent of the charge: an Islamic Ox-Bow Incident.

This compelling and emotional movie represents what occurs all too often in some Islamic countries.

Until a badly misjudged "action movie" climax, a painful and harrowing depiction of true toxic masculinity, and how it infects a society and leads to gendered violence and exploitation. Beautifully performed by all; anchored by Aghdashloo's extraordinarily empathetic lead. The depiction of the stoning, while ghoulish and horrific, is the important and necessary climax to this story, bringing focus to the societal and familial rot that exists in communities which condone this treatment.

19 ocak 2011 & iran'da kadina yapilan recmi, amerikali yonetmen de irana karsi yapiyor. bu yonuyle oldukca ironik bir anti-propoganda filmi. filmin ucuzlugu tamamen tek tarafli olusundan geliyor. filmdeki tek iyi erkek karakter, olaylari dinleyen fransiz gazeteci. 'evet, iranlilar kotu, islam boyle pis bir din, hadi iran'i yok edelim!' . . mide bulandirici olan filmin bu temel ustune kurulmasidir.
