Phenomenally bad. I can't figure what they were aiming at--at times it seemed like a kids' movie, like a parody, and like a Sin City wanna-be. The dialogue is some of the worst I have ever heard. It's not mind-blowingly weird, or so-bad-it's-funny, it's just a failure on every level.

Umm... well, The Spirit has its moments but most of the time it's pretty stupid. The characters are incredibly lame and the dialog is cheap, cheesy, and bewildering at times. The majority of the film, including its stylish action sequences, fall flat constantly. There's the occasional scene that is very cool but they are so few and far between you'll find yourself looking at the clock waiting for it to end. Not a good start here and hopefully this isn't a series that continues.

A silly, bizzare, stupid, lame, cheap and ripped off effort from Miller (He puts The Spirit in his sin city enviroment). It's an assault of unintentional laughs, undeniably boring situations, god-awful dialogue and forgettable action. It's like Miller just threw in two handfuls of ideas and just switched them around in a huge bowl. Not even the hot women can save this. Definetly one of the biggest letdowns this millenium (Yes, I was actually looking forward to this, go ahead, shoot me for it).

An extremely bizarre and grotesque farce and in terms of the staging, energy, tone, action, and dialogue, it's unquestionably some of the worst filmmaking of the decade. That said, the women are hot (no tits though), and Samuel L. Jackson melts a kitten.

There's a special genre of films, where the story doesn't count, dialogs and monologues are as wooden as an old wardrobe, but all female characters are richly endowed, wear funny outfits and have hots for the protagonist: it's called an erotic movie. Alas, to the dismay of all male viewers, there's absolutely no hint of anything you wouldn't want your ten-year-old daughter do. We'll have to satisfy ourselves with ogling half a dozen of really beautiful women - the only strong point of this film.

Terribly misunderstood. Like a real comic, it speaks in broad strokes and bloated moralism, only made more obvious by the high-contrast Miller visual style. Most of it is hilarious (honestly, do you think Jackson and Miller were taking themselves seriously?). I have my theories as to what they were thinking. But I also believe this will be discovered by a future generation as a cult classic.

Watching the Spirit is liking watching someone trying to reenact sketch comedy during a lunch break, the delivery is flat, the timing is off and they skip from the setup to the punchline. The movie works if you rationalize it as dream logic, but Frank Miller isn't trying to be David Lynch, and the imagery is in no way compelling. The humorless style of Sin City worked because of the energy and pacing, this is just a flaccid afterthought.

Just plain awful. Aside from Eva Mendes' bare butt there's really nothing worth mentioning. The acting is terrible (partly due to clichéd dialogue and a retarded script), the action is terrible (the first fight sets the tone with it's repetitive bashing that has no effect on the participants), the visual style is terrible (no style at all, just cheap film noir aesthetics executed poorly), the humor is REALLY terrible.

I really hope no one puts this in a time capsule. About halfway through the mud fight I wandered out into the lobby, looked around, bought an Icee. Came back about fifteen minutes later. Mud fight still going on. No other movie has never been so horrible that it forced me out of the theater. I would have asked for my money back if I hadn't been in a group with seven other people. It's absolutely amazing that this film was made by the same guy who made Sin City, only three years later, and going for a similar aesthetic. Sin City is one of my favorite movies, both visually and otherwise, but this somehow looks terrible. That's far from the only problem, with Macht a weak lead and several usually talented and reliable actors and actresses in supporting parts turning in very bad performances. It has a bad reputation, but I wasn't ready for it. Just shockingly bad.

I'm sure there was a cool story in there somewhere but it was buried under so much shit that I couldn't find it. I really feel sorry for all of the great actors that associated themselves with this film. (I don't feel that bad because they were paid.) The idea of the hero and the villain in this movie are pretty cool. A cop who was brought back to life by a crooked coroner with a mysterious serum. The coroner also took the same and now they are both immortal. There was so much that didn't work.

There wasn't much from the actual 40's-50's comic in that, if not for the tone spoofing the detective comics of the era. The style, while compared often to Sin City, seemed cleaner to me and interesting. There wasn't much to the plot, but then again when you get it was never meant to be taken seriously, it is justifiable. I enjoyed it.

Complete trainwreck, everything about this is bad but somehow it's still vaguely enjoyable. Visually it resembles a media student trying to copy Sin City on a tight budget. The script is terrible. It tries to be a humorous pastiche (at least I hope that was the intention), but nearly all the gags fail. On the plus side, it has Johansson and Jackson clearly having great fun hamming it up. Egg-obsessed Nazi Samuel L Jackson melting a kitten will stay with me forever.

This film almost does one thing right; I like aspects of its visual aesthetic, like the desaturated cityscape in the early scenes and the Spirit's costume. One-trick-comic-writer Miller then proceeds to completely screw up everything else, with a dull, hole-filled story, boring editing, inert fight scenes, underutilized actors, rampant sexism, subtle racism, and most noticeably, extremely annoying dialog. Despite good efforts, neither Macht nor Jackson could counteract Miller's total ineptitude.

The Spirit felt much longer than it really was. That's never a good sign. There was little to keep me watching it, save for the interesting visual style that was already done a few years prior in Sin City. And at least in that case, I was entertained for the majority of the time. The Spirit falls flat, mostly because of its uninteresting character, lackluster acting and almost non-existent story. It's intermittently funny, but that, and the visual style, is about all I can say is worth praising.

Admittedly the stylization is cool, but the actual substance of the movie is not. The movie is incredibly boring and it's hard to care enough to pay attention due to its awful writing, weird focus and bland action scenes. What annoys me more, as a fan of the comic, is that it's absolutely dreadful adaption of those stories - The Spirit was nothing like Sin City. It was a light hearted mystery series with occassionally poignant messages spread throughout. This, in comparison, is just a mess.

The Spirit is a film that is below average at its best. And mostly just a bit worse than that. Problem especially is that it comes out as a bad copy of Sin City, with less humor, less charm, worse acting, etc. But worst was simply the lack of debth in stylistic technique; which is exactly what is so important for this kind of film (and what made Sin City such a classic from the first second).
