The story of a naive, untalented film school student who boosts her self-esteem by hooking up with a freeloading, self-seeking junkie who likes to wear a trench coat for breakfast. At least it makes a great point about film school being a total waste of time.

The real star of this movie is that awful tweaker trench coat.

An inexperienced young woman falls without much thought or protest into a difficult relationship, while at the same time struggling to find her artistic identity. Told as if by stitching together fragments of memory, all elements are highly controlled, as is the behaviour of the protagonist, even if she never really has much of a handle on any aspect of her life. For that last reason, some audiences will find proceedings frustrating if not infuriating, but such are the risks of self-exposure.

A really boring and uninteresting movie about 2 extremely uninteresting people - that, even with that in common, don't seem to make a believable couple. 0 interesting dialogue or scenes.

A contained and claustrophobic portrait of a toxic relationship turning ugly; Hogg pulls off the difficult feat of making a reserved and largely objective film that still feels deeply and personally felt. Its iciness makes it difficult to fully embrace but it is still admirable for its understated emotions, and Byrne and Burke's perfect performances.

Rarely has a filmmaker expressed such roiling intensity of emotion with such extraordinary calm. The hypnotic stillness of Hogg's camera gives it the quality of flipping through an album of her own memories; what's more, the heightened awareness of the film's exquisite compositions and blocking allows the cast (uniformly fantastic) to shine even more brightly; so much of the film's complicated sense of growth and longing is expressed in body language and framing.

Kind hard to connect with given how rigid this visually takes place, but either way a poignant story of an abusive relationship through the eyes of a rich, privileged young woman who plans to do a film about the working-class of Sunderland's docs and ends up realizing she's gotta figure out who she is first, actually by doing a film about it -- those last shots are really beautiful, as some of depicting the relationship with her mom.

This is a subtle and arty kind of a film. The scenes move slowly and its mainly a sort of depiction of the main characters sense of personal isolation and their ability to open up, thus its about secrets and trust to a if but small extent. I can certainly understand why some may feel its a bit bland/dull - its not the sort of film that exactly grabs you visually, its safe to say. This will only really appeal if your ok with dialogue heavy and perhaps introspective type films, I'd have thought.

For the most part, it slowly burns what love receives into what love learns, letting go of grey areas that tamper with the creative mind.

The film is rather slow, confusing and has a sloppy feel at first. A good knowledge of UK early 80s music helps you with the timeline though. Thematically, it deals with two subjects and is apparently rather autobiographical: 1) finding your own artistic voice and 2) a destructive relationship. The main character is rather elusive, which probably is quite international. She has basicly just arrived from space and is a blank seger of paper. The acting from the two leads is great, particularly by

The movie is about naïveté, and it’s supposed to depict a rough learning experience, and it does that well in many ways and I liked it. But there were several points where I was so far ahead of the main character that it became boringly fatalistic. The later mother-daughter scenes are gorgeous

pleasantly surprised by this one. not just a simple story of a young burgeoning film student trying to find her feet in the big wide world but also of upper class society and the unique relationships found within. gotta laugh at ayoade's appearance in this which feels kind of out of place, although admittedly it feels like the stand out scene here

The premise is strong enough, and the pacing is appropriate and effective. I just don't find anything likeable, interesting, or relatable in these characters, despite some damaged psychology. I wonder why The Souvenir received so much critical praise. I have no interest in the sequel.

It’s really difficult to empathise with anyone at all in this film. I can’t figure out how self-aware Hogg is, and maybe that’s the problem/its merit in equal measure. As much as Anthony’s character is murky, he’s not convincing if some kind of concealed working-class origin is what’s meant to separate them. But her visceral fear of/detachment from the brutal reality of poverty & adversity (and how she reconciles with this) is convincing, which might reflect it being semi-autobiographical.

I mean, it's basically just a Maurice Pialat film but about posh British kids and I mean that in the nicest way possible. I want all of Anthony's outfits.

Appreciated the memory-like construction of this, even as it strains credulity at points. In particular, I really struggled with the scene in which Julie apologizes to Antony, for its abruptness and for its earnestness in the face of his evident lack of care. This kind of thing happens, but it's harder to imagine in a person of her ability and wisdom. Further, why did this have to be nearly all the negative moments from their life together--very little helps us to understand the draw to him.

The closing two shots redeemed this movie for me. The rest fell short of indie, coming-of-age, memoir greatness. I'm not entirely sure why it fails, but its pace felt less measured and meditative than simply plodding.

To recognize and view self-destruction in real-time - perhaps even one's own undoing - and yet to be at the mercy of love. I appreciate and enjoy this film's understated manner, its naturalism, and these two lead performances, but it remains at arm's length for me.

Plods a little but is shot well, though I think the way it's shot makes it potentially more challenging. There are some absolutely beautiful scenes, however, there's also a certain coldness and isolation to it in regards to where the camera places itself, the way it lingers, the distance and even the sets themselves. It fits thematically, doesn't always make for the most compelling view... I however think the directing, knowing that, was really good.

Difficult to get into, but not without its merits. The movie often kept me at arm's length in the way that sometimes lingers and then suddenly jumps forward in time, as if half-remembered from a dream, but at the same time that makes it feel like a very personal work.

An ambitious autobiographical project that seeks to explore the relationship between art and self-expression. While the emotions and pain of the filmmaker are raw & vulnerable & powerful in a very understated British kind of way, the meta-commentary about art frustratingly comes across as the sort of academic babble that critics love, but that comes across as pretentious & inaccessible to the general public. Superb acting though, expect to see a lot more of Honor Swinton Byrne in the future.
