Balthazar Blake (Nicolas Cage) is a master sorcerer in modern-day Manhattan trying to defend the city from his arch-nemesis, Maxim Horvath (Alfred Molina). Balthazar can't do it alone, so he recruits Dave Stutler (Jay Baruchel), a seemingly average guy who demonstrates hidden potential, as his reluctant protégé. The sorcerer gives his unwilling accomplice a crash course in the art and science of magic, and together, these unlikely partners work to stop the forces of darkness.

Pardon me if this sounds overdramatic, but The Sorcerer's Apprentice is everything that's wrong with contemporary cinema. Sure, it's robustly produced, glossy, and full of special effects, but in the end it's just a lump of made-by-committee nothing, without a single moment that even attempts to move, surprise, excite, or intrigue you in any way whatsoever. The lack of ambition is grotesque.

Not all bad. The story was by the numbers and pretty predictable. It explains EVERYTHING (but I think they did that because the target audience is pretty young). While I think most kids will enjoy the whole movie, the effects and a few humorous parts will make it watchable for adults. Not anything I would recommend to people my age, but if you have a kid you could do a lot worse in terms of films you watch with them.

If it's Nicholas Cage, it's bad. But this time it goes further and ends up as nothing but a mockery; an unfathomably apologetic film, wasting a talented VFX team's brilliantly done visual effects, by a team of filmmakers who seem to be utterly clueless as to what they are making.

A film that tries very hard not to exceed any expectations. It's exactly what it looks like in the trailer, and that's not much. Very hand-holding and generally just watered down from what could've been a modern day children's classic like Disney's last venture with the source material. The special effects are just okay, and the characters are all pretty flat.

Think it accomplishes what it sets out to do. Cage is as enjoyable as always. I thought some of the vibe of the movie was pretty direct-to-tv, but you know what? I enjoyed this enough to say people should give it a go. It's light fantasy, but it's not without it's charm. And it definitely doesn't deserve all the hate it's getting... save it for a truly offensive movie that tries to offer more than just a decent time.

Entertaining for sure! The new Cage is sublime; the mildly decrepit middle-aged Cage, accepting his role as no longer being sex-symbol, trying to be half de Niro, half Stallone, but just being fun, versatile and not afraid of any character. I wanna see more. Some of the stuff in the film was abysmal, as you would've expected, but still, young guns acted fine, Molina was superb I think, speaking of versatile (!), and well ... better than I'd expected. Lame, anti-climax ending, though.

Baruchel plays a staggeringly boring protagonist; I tried to think of a single likable trait in the guy, and came up empty. Consequently, the love scenes are hilarious because you have Bellucci's character falling for him for no explicable reason. It would make as much sense for her to fall in love with a baked potato - maybe more. Additionally, the plot is so typical that you could find more originality at a plagiarist convention. Watch it for Nick Cage - there's no other reason to see this.

Only a self-professed "physics nerd," Jay Baruchel channelling Christian Slater, has the capacity to become the Prime Merlinian who once and for all can vanquish Morgana le Fay and prevent the enslavement of mankind, if he's not too distracted by his pursuit of a childhood sweetheart, Teresa Palmer channelling Scarlett Johansson. Flippant apocalyptic fantasy, slickly, greasily photographed by Bojan Bozelli.

Watchable but bland and workmanlike effort from Turtletaub, who usually knows his way around frivolous entertainment better than this - too heavy handed and clunky in its exposition drops, it then suffers from a leading man identity crisis: with Baruchel the nominal lead, but Cage (the standout here) refusing to go quietly into the shadows of supporting. Molina is pretty much wasted (and a movie that features both Cage and Molina should never have emerged so dull).

The movie opens some time in the Medieval Age, in the castle of the legendary Arthurian wizard Merlin. With an overly heavy-handed and drawn out voiceover, we are told that Merlin has three apprentices: Balthazar (Nicolas Cage), Horvath (Alfred Molina) and Veronica (Monica Bellucci), who are trying to protect Merlin and his dangerous spell - generically titled "The Rising" - from falling into the hands of the evil sorceress Morgana (Alice Krige).

I don't like Nicolas Cage so much, but he did a decent job here. Acting and the story are all ok. Showing the passing time is a nice thing, too. Special effects don't scream for attention, but are spectacular nonetheless (i.e. I liked the "mirror" thing a lot). The leading theme can be named "the chosen one" type of movie, so if you like this stuff, you won't regret watching. You will also like it if you like fantasy - action movies. But mind me, it's nothing very original, an enjoyable eyecandy.

I was pretty surprised at how much I liked this movie. Cage was really good, although I do wish that he would have brought more of his good craziness into his role ala Drive Angry. Still I liked Cage regardless. I thought that the main character's love interest was absolutely gorgeous. Jay Baruchel did fine, his voice grated on me sometimes though. I did like some of his funny facial expressions, plus he became an ultimate badass at the end of the film. Not bad for live action Disney.

Something about present-day Nic Cage is just so off that it's hilarious. Every time the guy appeared on screen for the first 5 minutes of the film, I burst out laughing. For what this is--just your regular toothless, polished-to-no-end teen flick (with a nutty budget)--it's perfectly passable, with fine action and some funny moments (not counting my "bwahaha, it's Nic Cage! This film has what the Harry Potter series was missing: wizards battling it out in truly spectacular fashion. Worth seeing for that reason alone (and a few glimpses of Monica Bellucci in all her glory). Baruchel is quite good in the lead role. For a movie like this pacing is everything, but we're forced through back story and exposition for nearly half the film with both heroes and villains lacking basic urgency or competence. The saddest thing of all is in a role seemingly built for a manic Nicolas Cage, we get instead a tortuously subdued performance amongst a sea of actors who couldn't be more bored with their roles.

Ehhh there's not much to be found here at all, but I struggle calling it awful. It just isn't enjoyable in anyway. Cage was pretty cool but as Melvin Smif noted, he wasn't over-the-top enough. Perhaps buried somewhere inside its script there is a decent idea that could then be professionally fleshed out into an actual film, but no amount of mop and broom live action referencing and shiny electric bubbles can justify this junk. I have a theory that the Disney creative staff have good hearts and are generally brilliant, or at least superior, with the material they put their minds to. Their marketing department is the villain from their own films, illustrating modern moral decay of nigh philistine proportions of depravity. Though the actors try their damnest, this is really a project from the soulless abyss of Disney marketing hell.

Features significantly less Nic Cage awesome acting than I was lead to believe and features a very generic plot. Also features less awesome evil sorcerers than the film lets on initially. For fighting Morganites for 1000 years there apparently weren't many that Balthazar decided he should trap. Also features less dead-army than expected. Everything that could've made this more enjoyable was lacking instead consistent with poorly written dialogue and obvious plot directions.

This isn't a terrible film. It's completely watchable, with strong direction and incredible action sequences that flow well with the pace of a movie. But why have characters in this action when I don't care about these characters? They're all entirely 2-dimentional cutouts from a number of similar films. Not entirely sure if it's good or bad that there is more magic in a look shared between two 10-year-olds on a bus than in the entire rest of the movie. It is, I think, both disappointing and amazing, and indicative of the fact that while the film fails at almost everything it tries, beneath the horrendous exposition, misguided choices and nonsense lies a film with a beating heart, and maybe even a soul. Unfortunately they didn't film that part, so we're left with this.
