This is a pretty straightforward, entertaining western with a really good supporting cast including Paul Fix as the town sheriff and Dennis Hopper as Gregory's weasely son.

The John Wayne effect carries this western to the watchable side of the scale.

Dated and not very brave in its choices, however the leads are charming for the most part. A decent watch for genre fans.

Basic hero/villain, black/white nonsense. Everyone in town hates the Elders for no believable reason. Any interesting themes brought up are later abandoned in order to make the plot more formulaic.

Nothing special. Contemptible deputy sheriff character eventually comes around but is more obnoxious than sinister.

A pretty fun movie and the way the cast was, it showed. A good build up from the first hour and a half to a very climactic last half hour. Dean Martin was a scene stealer in just about every scene he was in.

I love westerns so I gave this a ninety but I'm not a big John Wayne fan because he wan't a real cowboy, he didn't embrace the cowboy lifestyle like many of his contemporaries did.

A solid Wayne western, although The Duke is at least 20 years too old for the role he plays in the film. The cast is an all-star lineup of man's men, from Wayne through George Kennedy through Earl Holliman (who I remember best from the Angie Dickinson "Police Woman" television series) through James Gregory as the villain Morgan Hastings. And a fantastic score by Elmer Bernstein.
